Job summary

The Domiciliary Phlebotomist is responsible for visiting housebound or vulnerable patients in their homes to collect blood samples safely and professionally on behalf of the GP practice. The role includes specimen handling, accurate documentation, infection prevention, and maintaining high standards of patient care while working independently in the community.In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to support practice-based phlebotomy provision by covering a proportion of early morning, evening, and weekend clinics as required.

Job description Job responsibilities

Visit patients in their homes according to the schedule provided by the GP surgery. Perform venepuncture procedures safely and competently. Identify patients correctly using approved protocols. Label and handle blood samples accurately in line with laboratory requirements. Ensure timely transport or delivery of specimens to the surgery. Maintain accurate clinical records using electronic patient systems. Monitor patients for adverse reactions during or after blood collection. Follow infection prevention and control procedures at all times. Dispose of sharps and clinical waste safely according to policy. Maintain stock levels of phlebotomy supplies and equipment. Escalate safeguarding, clinical, or welfare concerns appropriately. Communicate professionally with patients, carers, district nurses, GPs, and other healthcare professionals. Work independently while adhering to lone-working procedures. Maintain confidentiality and comply with GDPR and NHS information governance standards. Participate in mandatory training, audits, and service improvement activities. Undertake any other additional duties appropriate to the post as requested by the Partners or the Practice Manager.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Phlebotomy qualification or competency-based training. Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Desirable

Care Certificate or equivalent NVQ

Experience Essential

Experience performing venepuncture in adults. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently in the community. Experience working in primary care or community healthcare.

Desirable

Experience with elderly, frail, or housebound patients. Knowledge of NHS/community services.
