About this role

Job summary

The Department of ENT is seeking a substantitive full time (10 PA) Consultant to join an enthusiastic and forward thinking Department which has six subsantive consultants. Each consultant has a specialist interest which they are happy to pursue. The Department is currently involved in many exciting initiatives and are looking for an individuals with appropriate specialist skills (thyroid disease) to complelement the existing team and keep the service in the forefront of clinical excellence.

Main duties of the job

The applicant will be involved in managing general ENT conditions with a special interest in thryoid surgery hence the need to attend regional Thyroid MDT and comply with the guidance provided by the MDT.

In addition -To provide ENT emergencies that are managed in a DGH. Involved in training specialist registrars, foundation doctors and GP trainees.

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Full Registration with the GMC FRCS (ORL-HNS) Completion of higher training (CCT or within 6 months of obtaining) or CESR

Desirable

Postgraduate degree: e.g. MD, PhD Postgraduate qualification in Education Post CCT Fellowship

Experience Essential

Ability to offer sound clinical opinion on range of acute medical conditions. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients. Ability to manage and lead medical/surgical teams. Ability to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit. Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload. Experience of supervising junior medical staff. Commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students. Evidence of participation in audit. Ability to extrapolate clinical research evidence to care for individual patients.

Desirable

Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery. Evidence of participation in quality improvement project. Evidence of having conducted a practice changing audit. Experience of teaching/training in clinical courses e.g. IMPACT Course, Faculty, ALS Instructor, ALERT Instructor. Original peer-reviewed research publication.

Special Requirements Essential

Ability to work flexibly in a changing health service. Excellent manner with patients, being sensitive to their needs and fears. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, Nurses and other health professionals and flex style as appropriate. Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional and national levels.

Ability to communicate effectively with external agencies and other disciplines.
