ELHT is a busy hospital and the department covers anaesthetic services to all major surgical specialties including general surgery, urology, orthopaedics and trauma, gynaecology, ENT and maxillofacial surgery. We are a nominated vascular centre and tertiary referral centre for HPB. There is a busy obstetric unit with around 6500 deliveries per year. There is a midwifery led unit in Blackburn (separate site) and a co-located midwifery unit and consultant led unit in Burnley. We currently have a 28 bedded mixed critical care unit on the Blackburn site.
We are a friendly supportive department and are firmly committed to education. We will support any eligible specialty doctor through the CESR process with access to the required surgical specialties. There is also a regional CESR program which successful candidates will be able to apply for. We receive good feedback from trainees. We are ACSA accredited.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to provide preoperative assessment, perioperative and postoperative care to patients across both sites of this busy Teaching Hospital Trust.
This will require some ability to work independently although Consultant cover is always available. The successful candidate will be expected to provide anaesthesia for the broad range of surgical specialties on site. This includes General surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Ophthalmology and Gynaecology. In addition, we provide anaesthesia for Hepato-Biliary, Vascular, and Major Head & Neck services.
The on-call commitment will be on a 1:11 basis (non-prospective) and is based at Burnley General Hospital. This site provides emergency services for Obstetrics and Gynaecology and is covered by a two tier rota with distant consultant supervision. The post holder will be resident and will support the trainee rota by providing emergency gynaecology services alongside support for the obstetric unit.
The theatre sessions will be flexible in site and specialty according to negotiation and the requirements of the service. This is indicative and subject to change as the service demands. There may also be changes associated with "NHS Services, Seven Days a Week".
