Main duties of the job
The role
The Grammar School at Leeds is seeking to appoint a compassionate and proactive nurse to join our friendly school nursing team. The nursing team provides a varied and well utilised service from 8:00-18:00 Monday to Friday, and term time (rotational) Saturday cover for home sporting fixtures. We provide high quality care to pupils, and contribute to the pastoral and first aid provision across the School community within primary and secondary school (ages 3-18).
As part of our role, we support pupils with a variety of health conditions at school. We work with parents, cares, and specialist health professionals, teachers, and the Individual Needs department to develop school care plans and enable pupils to take a full and active role in school. As an active member of the pastoral and safeguarding team, we provide pastoral interventions with pupils, and there are training opportunities to enable the provision of mental health first aid support for pupils.
The nursing team contribute to the PHSE curriculum by providing teaching sessions with pupils on a range of health topics, as well as teaching sessions with colleagues in relation to first aid and health conditions.
We are looking for nurses with a professional nursing qualification, and at minimum 12 months post registration experience.Experience of working in paediatric / teenager and young adult healthcare would be valued.

Main purpose of the role
To provide a high quality service of care to pupils. Tocontribute to the smooth running of the Medical/First Aidand pastoral provision across the School community andwork in collaboration with the other nurses in the team aswell as pastoral colleagues.
Main responsibilities
Be responsible for the smooth and efficient running of the Medical Rooms across the school site, ensuring efficient systems and processes are in place/protocol followed.To work in the Student Support Services area in the Senior School and in the Primary School.Administering medication according to the Schools medicine policy and oversee the supervision of storage of medicines.To work with parents, carers, specialist health professionals and others to develop in school care plans for pupils with complex health needs and long-term conditions and oversee the health needs of individual pupils with specific issues.Liaise with the counselling therapists provided by The Oakdale Centre in Harrogate.Provide pastoral support for delegated year group.Delivery of first aid and emergency care and treatment as necessary this includes sporting fixtures on a Saturday.Maintaining stock of school First Aid equipment.Report Child Welfare concerns to the designated members of staff for Safeguarding and Child Protection.Provide information for teachers as required, on the use of epipens and inhalers as well as any other medical needs for pupils.Provide information for staff on specific health needs e.g. diabetes care, epilepsy, allergies, substance misuse.Liaise with Public Health Services on a programme of immunisation across the School and follow good practice and specific directives on immunisation procedures relevant to the School populationOperate procedures for control of infectious diseases.Be aware of recommended safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs and follow procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste.Promote health education within School including working with staff on health initiatives.Take part in the delivery of PSHE in all three sections of School and support teaching staff as appropriate.
This will include presenting and delivering talks as directed.To ensure the provision of and access to a range of publicity materials on issues relating to student health.Keep up-to-date with current health promotion initiatives and contribute to relevant School Policies related to health and wellbeing.Support the School First Aiders, with advice and access to other NHS services where necessary.Maintain medical records accurately, confidentially and securely and maintain daily treatment records, using both CPOMS (child protection and pastoral database) and ISAMs(the Schools pupil record database).Work closely with pupils, parents, Lead Nurse, other members of the Student Support Team, Senior Leadership Team, teaching colleagues, Support colleagues and other departments, as necessary, to ensure the seamless and continuous care of pupils.Use evidence-based practice to develop and maintain a high quality of nursing care to the pupils.Contribute to development of the service.General

Qualifications Essential
A professional nursing qualification the minimum requirement being RGN and a valid NMC Pin Minimum of 5 GCSEs in Maths and English, grade C/4 or above, or equivalent.
Desirable
Ideally educated to degree level and/or hold a relevant qualification. First Aid at Work qualification.
Experience Essential
A minimum of 12 months post registration experience. A wide range of general nursing experience. Experience of working with children and young people and an awareness of their rights and needs. Knowledge and understanding of current national and local health agendas. Up to date knowledge of health and safety and infection control. Adhere to the NMC Code of professional conduct and be conversant with the scope of professional practice and other NMC advisory papers.
Desirable
Experience working with paediatric / teenager and young adults. Experience in mental health / counselling provision.
