Job summary The Technician Bed & Equipment Services role is responsible for supporting the effective delivery, maintenance, and management of hospital beds and associated equipment across clinical areas. The post holder will ensure timely delivery, collection, repair, and servicing of equipment to meet operational performance targets and maintain high standards of patient safety. This includes diagnosing faults, carrying out repairs, PAT testing, and maintaining accurate asset records. Working closely with clinical teams, porters, and suppliers, the role requires excellent organisational skills, a strong customer service approach, and the ability to prioritise tasks in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Main duties of the job This is a hands-on technical role supporting hospital operations by ensuring beds and medical equipment are safe, functional, and available when needed. The role involves delivering and installing equipment, responding to breakdowns, carrying out repairs and preventative maintenance, and managing inventory within clinical areas. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, providing excellent customer service while maintaining compliance with health and safety and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will be proactive, technically capable, and comfortable working in a busy, patient-focused environment.

Type: Full time, Permanent
Salary: £30,500 - £32,300 per annum + up to 12% annual bonus
Rota: 7 day rota across all Trust sites
We are looking for a motivated and customer-focused Technical Assistant to join our Bed and Equipment Services team at KFM. This is a hands-on, patient-facing role that plays a vital part in ensuring clinical staff have access to safe, well-maintained bed equipment when they need it most.

About the Role
As a Technical Assistant within Bed and Equipment Services, you will be responsible for the delivery, collection, maintenance, and repair of specialist bed equipment across the hospital. You will respond to requests from ward staff, ensure stores are well-stocked, and support the achievement of key performance indicators including timely delivery and high levels of customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver and collect specialist bed equipment to and from wards and bed stores, responding to requests within 4 hours
Ensure adequate buffer stock of specialist mattresses is maintained across store rooms
Diagnose and repair faults on bed inventory and associated equipment; carry out servicing and calibrations
Undertake statutory PAT testing of beds and associated electrical equipment
Maintain accurate records of all maintenance, repairs, and equipment locations on the asset database
Work with the Portering teams to ensure timely delivery and collection of bed frames and foam mattresses
Check all equipment is in good working order and safe for use before deployment
Assemble, install, and commission new beds and associated equipment as required
Support continuous improvement by identifying recurring equipment faults and suggesting solutions
Maintain a safe, tidy working environment in patient areas, clinical areas, and corridors at all times
Requirements
Essential:
Good standard of general education including GCSE Maths & English grades AC (or equivalent)
Experience working in a busy, fast-paced environment
Experience using PAT Testing equipment with up-to-date training
Ability to provide excellent customer service to a range of stakeholders
Ability to multitask, prioritise, and know when to escalate issues
Ability to troubleshoot a variety of medical beds, mattresses, and ASU equipment
Ability to carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) on medical equipment
Computer literate, including Microsoft Office, Excel, databases, and online ordering portals
Self-motivated with the ability to work unsupervised
Physically fit (assessed by occupational health) to move and handle bed inventory
Flexible with duties and working hours across a seven-day rota
Desirable:
Previous experience working within a healthcare or NHS setting
Experience using PDAs, scanners, or handheld devices in a mobile working environment
Understanding of quality improvement principles
