Lead Midwife for 24-hour Maternity Triage

Department Maternity

Band 7 £49,387 - £56,515 Per annum

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

We are seeking an experienced, dynamic and motivated midwife to lead our maternity triage service.

This role requires excellent leadership and collaborative working across multidisciplinary teams and departments. The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of maternity triage, ensuring that all women/birthing people presenting to the service are assessed and managed in a timely manner, with appropriate escalation and referral in line with clinical need.

The successful candidate will lead on the Birmingham Symptom Specific Obstetric Triage (BSOTS) system, supporting the ongoing education and development of staff in this model. A key focus of the role will be to drive quality improvement and innovation within the service, identifying opportunities to enhance standards of care and patient experience.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide leadership and provide oversight of care of all women requiring the Maternity Triage facility on a daily basis, ensuring that not in and out hours the skill mix of the team meet the clinical needs of the complex demographic that will be accessing the maternity triage service.

The postholder will maintain own clinical skills and competencies and have excellent communication skills. The postholder will work within the NMC rules and standards and Trust guidelines and procedures.

The postholder will work within the multidisciplinary team and will be responsible for the planning, development, smooth running and maintenance of Maternity Triage for women attending the Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The postholder will provide accurate, unbiased, non-judgemental evidence based information to both the multidisciplinary team and service users and empower the team to do the same

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

To provide clinical and professional leadership in the care of women attending Maternity Triage, maintaining professional expertise in the use of the BSOTS model of maternity triage.

Ensure the smooth running on a day-to-day basis of Maternity Triage.

Communication and Relationship Skills

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the multi-disciplinary team, our colleagues in the Emergency Department and wider trust

Represent and promote the Women's Service Unit, Women & Children's Division and Trust internally and externally as required.

Managerial Responsibilities

Required to manage maternity triage team members on a day-to-day basis and undertake appraisals of all staff members within the team.

Required to promote and provide opportunities and resources for staff development and training.

Education, Training and Development

Provide an effective learning environment within the clinical area.

Ensure that all staff working within the maternity triage are compliant with statutory and mandatory training requirements.

Professional and Legal Responsibilities

Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.

Maintain a high standard of professional practice at all times and to participate in professional supervision as required.

Operational and Working Conditions

To comply with the Health and Safety Policy in accordance with the agreed policies and procedures. To report any accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards or serious untoward incidents in accordance with the agree procedures.

To participate in the Maternity Bleep Holder rota as required following training, guidance and support.

Person Specification

Qualifications and knowledge Essential

Registered Midwife Degree in Midwifery ENB 997/998 or equivalent/mentorship qualification. Demonstrable evidence of continuing professional education and development as per NMC requirements. Completion of specialist Fetal monitoring training and masterclasses

Desirable

Completion of master's degree/ actively working or planning towards. Experience of Human factors training

Experience Essential

Demonstrable experience in developing self, others and changing practice. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the national maternity safety agenda and transformation programme. Demonstrable understanding of governance and risk processes in maternity. Proven leadership and management skills.

Desirable

Demonstrate experience in maternity triage and working within the wider multidisciplinary network

Skills Essential

Act as a role model demonstrating exemplary skills in maternity triage care. Flexible, highly motivated, and supportive of others. Ability to develop excellent working relationships with all staff within the organisation and external partners. Strong organisational and planning skills Willing to develop new skills including completing appropriate training as required. Ability to adapt written and verbal communication skills to the audience Ability to undertake a wide range of work procedures without direct supervision Ability to analyse data and produce required reports and information

Personal and people development Essential

Willing to develop new skills including completing appropriate training as required. Working with midwives and obstetricians to improve knowledge and skills relating to the BSOTS triage model

Desirable

Experience of managing and coordinating services to maintain safety and escalate as appropriate.

Communication Essential

Excellent communication skills and ability to be responsive to highly emotive conversations. Recognising when staff may require further debriefing following adverse events.
