Job summary

The LAS ST4 doctor will assess and review patients with intellectual disability and mental health problems in the Maudsley Outpatient Clinic (Monday afternoons) based at Maudsley Hospital. A caseload will be assigned to them by the consultant psychiatrist under close supervision.

Main duties of the job

The LAS ST4 doctor may also be required to visit patients at other locations within the Borough i.e. at home, day centre and so on. In addition, they will participate and contribute to the weekly Lambeth MHLD Team meeting, liaise with patients' GPs, social services, third sector organisations and other external agencies.

The LAS ST4 doctor will be expected to attend Care Programme Approach (CPA) meetings and other multidisciplinary meetings.

You will receive weekly clinical supervision provided from Dr Partsenidis (Consultant Psychiatrist).

The appointed doctor will be expected to complete mandatory training.

About us

The LAS ST4 doctor will work in the community team for adults with intellectual disability and mental illness and/or significant challenging behaviour within the London borough of Lambeth. They will work as part of a multidisciplinary team made up of psychiatrists, community psychiatric nurses, clinical psychologists and a behaviour support worker.

Person Specification

Experience Essential

At least 24 months full-time equivalent experience (at core trainee or SHO-equivalent, or staff grade or staff grade equivalent) in Psychiatry. Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams in Psychiatry. Assessment & Treatment of severe mental illness in adults.

Desirable

4-6 months full-time equivalent experience (at core trainee or SHO-equivalent, or staff grade or staff grade equivalent) in Psychiatry of Learning Disability or CAMHS.o4-6 months full-time equivalent experience (at core trainee or SHO-equivalent, or staff grade or staff grade equivalent) in Psychiatry of Learning Disability or CAMHS. Assessment & Treatment of severe mental illness in adults with learning disability

Knowledge & Qualifications Essential

MB BS or equivalent Full General Medical Council (GMC) Registration, or appropriate GMC Registration for this post Right to work in the UK

Desirable

Passed written components of the MRCPsych (Paper A, Paper B or both). Passed MRCPsych CASC. Section 12 approved for the purposes of Mental Health Act (MHA) work OR potentially eligible for approval.

Skills & Personal Qualities Essential

Basic IT skills Good communication skills, including spoken and written English. Capacity to communicate effectively and sensitively with others. Experience of working in a team, including: capacity to work co-operatively with others and show leadership when appropriate; capacity to work effectively in multi-professional and multi-agency teams. Capacity and motivation to treat others with understanding and sensitivity, and to see patients as people Good awareness of the bio-psycho-social model in assessing & managing people with complex needs & mental illness. Capacity to see beyond the obvious, and to bring a range of approaches to solving problems Good organisational and prioritising skills. Good knowledge and awareness of care programme approach (CPA) & risk assessment

Desirable

Good awareness of the 'recovery model' and social inclusion principles for mental illness Experience in the management of patients with LD and autism Interest in, and experience of, teaching. Critical appraisal skills Evidence of involvement in an audit project OR a quality improvement project.
