Job summary

Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse - Kestrel Ward, North Wales Adolescent Service

Are you a compassionate and motivated Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) or Registered Learning Disability Nurse (RNLD) who is passionate about supporting young people aged 12-17 years? Whether your experience comes from CAMHS or another setting working with young people, we welcome your transferable skills and will support your development into specialist adolescent care.

What you'll be doing

o Acting as Case Manager for a small group of young people, coordinating high-quality, individualised care.

o Working closely within a supportive Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).

o Contributing to a safe, therapeutic, and developmentally supportive ward environment.

o Supporting effective transition and discharge planning.

o Providing leadership, supervision, and mentorship to junior colleagues and students.

Main duties of the job

Who we're looking for

o Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) or Registered Learning Disability Nurse (RNLD).

o Genuine passion for supporting young people.

o Strong communication and teamwork skills.

o Flexible, compassionate, and adaptable.

o Experience in CAMHS or other relevant areas involving mental health or young people (no prior inpatient CAMHS experience required).

o Full-time equivalent post.

o Kestrel Ward operates 24/7, so flexibility across shift patterns, including nights, is essential.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge Essential

Must be first level registered Mental Health Nurse Post registration qualification in Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Experience of working in in-patient Adolescent Mental Health Work Evidence of continuing professional development relating to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nursing

Ability to generate effective therapeutic relationships with young people (patients) A clear understanding of the nursing process and the Mental Health Measures and how they relate to children and young people with mental health problems Ability to communicate with multi-disciplinary team colleagues and other professionals, both verbally and in writing Ability to be assertive and to take a leadership role in teams Sound knowledge of child development and factors that are likely to contribute to mental health difficulties in children and young people who have mental health problems Experience of service evaluation and audit and a good knowledge of the components of clinical governance Sound knowledge of issues affecting the nursing of young people with mental health problems Ability to assess mental health problems. This requires the ability to use information gathered from a variety of sources to provide a formulation of a mental health problem. Ability to assess and manage risk, in particular being able to identify risk factors relating to mental health problems in young people and to implement appropriate risk management strategies Group work skills Ability to provide and engage in effective clinical supervision Ability to work cooperatively with other agencies and disciplines Ability to participate in training in non-aversive holding techniques including restrictive physical intervention training Ability to remain calm in the personal management of challenging situations Knowledge of teamwork and team dynamics and an ability to work in teams and in a multidisciplinary setting Good reflective ability and an understanding of its importance in the context of interpersonal working Ability to organise and plan work activities for nursing team Ability to work flexibly and to adapt clinical approach to needs of clients, working in partnership with client and parents/carers A good and developing level of self-awareness and how one's own experiences may impact upon one's attitudes and interactions.
