About this role

Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a locum consultant physician to the Department of Diabetes & Metabolism at the Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trus. The post will be based at the Royal London Hospital (RLH) and Mile End diabetes centre (MEH).

The post will largely be a General Internal Medicine (GIM) post at RLH with 1 or 2 clinical sessions specifically within Type 1 diabetes and Antenatal Diabetes.

The post holder will join the Diabetes & Metabolism team at RLH and join the current Consultant of the week rota (currently contributing 8 weeks of general medicine annually) and provide weekend on call cover for Diabetes & Metabolism and inpatients (1 in 8) as part of the commitment.

The appointee will work a 4 PA job plan with seven day working incorporated into the timetable.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate professional excellence and the ability to deliver effective and compassionate care. The successful candidate will be required to adhere to the Trust's policy on Maintaining Medical Excellence and to be committed to maintaining their standard of performance by keeping their knowledge and skills up to date.

Main duties of the job

o Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

o Leadership, development and organisation of the services in his/her charge in line with the Trusts' business plans. Liaison and communication with the Clinical Director, General Manager and the Clinical lead for Diabetes & Metabolism.

o With the agreement of the Clinical Director and the lead for Diabetes & Metabolism, development of his/her own interests and sub-specialties within the specialty, in line with business planning principles and commissioners' approval, including active participation in research programmes.

o Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.

o To participate fully in the management of the department and to liaise closely with the Clinical Director, Service Manager, General Manager and the lead for Diabetes & Metabolism.

o The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

o The duties outlined are not definite and may be changed in accordance with needs of the service requiring the post holder to be cooperative and flexible.

Person Specification

Professional Qualifications Essential

MB BS, or equivalent MRCP or equivalent Entry on the GMC specialist register via 1 of the following: 1. CCT (or within 6 months of date of interview) 2. CESR 3. European Community Rights

Desirable

Higher degree, e.g. MD/PhD

Clinical Experience/Skills Essential

Competent and trained in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus/ General Internal Medicine

Clinical Knowledge Essential

Widespread broad-based knowledge of all aspects of Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus/ General Internal Medicine

Audit Management & IT Essential

Able to provide evidence of clinical audit and demonstrate understanding of impact and challenges this brings Ability to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of current and future NHS challenges and strategy. Ability to support team members in business planning via collaboration and discussion Knowledge and basic proficiency of IT systems used in NHS

Desirable

Evidence of innovative approaches to healthcare Experience of audit/ management

Research. Teaching skill & experience Essential

Ability to demonstrate personal experience of clinical research and describe and discuss findings and impact Experience of research, presentations to learned societies on topics related to cardiology Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical/surgical problems
