Job summary

The role of Specialty Training Programme Director for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (South West Simulation Lead and South of the region Operations) will work with and support the Head of School for Obstetrics and Gynaecology in leading the delivery of a wide range of functions, aligned to the NHS England mandate and long-term workforce plan.

The rolewill focus upon improvement of learner supervision, assessment and experience, engagement of faculty and ensuring effective educational outcomes, both now and in the future.

The appointment will be made on the basis of a part-time secondment to NHS England, alongside existing employment with an NHS Trust in the South West geographical footprint.

This is a senior educator position appointed on a secondment basis until 31 March 2027.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced clinician with a thorough understanding of education and training across the region. They will also have strong leadership and communication skills and be able to work effectively as a member of a multi-professional team.

Main duties of the job

The post will consist of two main roles. Firstly, being the South West Lead for Simulation for O&G Post-Graduate training. Simulation-based training is becoming a larger and more important part of training post-graduate doctors within O&G. This role will lead on the simulation programme across the South West including simulation-based training for laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and ultrasound. The ideal candidate will demonstrate proven interest and previous experience in organising and delivering simulation training. The role will liaise and work closely with the TPD for Education, who delivers the general O&G educational programme, the other TPDs, the Education Business Leader and the Head of School.

The second part of the role is the Lead for the South of the Region Operations. Currently the South West training programme is geographically divided into South rotation and North rotation. This role will organise the placement of resident doctors in hospital trusts within Devon and Cornwall for their training. The role works closely with residents, the Head of School, the Education Business Leader and Chairs of trainee committee to ensure the smooth running of the rotation to satisfy the residents training needs. In this role the TPD will attend ARCPs as part of the ARCP panel. To note a review of training rotations is ongoing with the aim to improve doctors working lives and the TPD will take an active part in the design and implementation of the proposed rotations.

Qualifications and Training Essential

Primary clinical healthcare qualification Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development (example: educator courses, Train the trainer, etc) Consultant currently working in the South West

Experience and Knowledge Essential

Considerable experience of working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education

Skills and Abilities Essential

Demonstrable leadership skills and an ability to influence and motivate others Ability to quickly establish personal and professional credibility with colleagues and other key stakeholders
