Job summary
Knebworth & Marymead Medical Practice is a modern, forward-thinking general practice operating across two well-established sites in Knebworth and South Stevenage, serving a diverse patient population of around 13,000 in both suburban and semi-rural settings.
We are a teaching and training practice, supporting GP trainees, medical students, nursing students, and other learners. We are looking to appoint an experienced and motivated part time (19.5 hours) Prescribing Clerkto join our friendly, supportive, and well-organised prescribing team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a someone who has experience of medication and prescribing processes, perhaps from a dispensing background. Previous experience is essential in order to help sufficiently support the team and the practice prescribing and repeat prescription function overall. Knowledge and experience of SystmOne would be advantageous.

Main duties of the job
Responsible for the accurate and timely processing of prescription requests for our patient population, ensuring effective communication with patients, pharmacies, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals. Duties include managing repeat prescriptions in multiple formats, processing requests through SystmOne and the Electronic Prescribing Service (EPS), maintaining accurate patient records, and supporting safe and effective medicines management.
Provide administrative support to the team, contributing to organisational objectives, including QOF and ECF targets. Action medication-related tasks, update patient records, document interactions accurately, and escalate medication queries to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, or GPs as appropriate. Liaise with pharmacies regarding medication supply issues and communicate alternatives to clinicians when required.
Manage emails, telephone enquiries, and correspondence relating to medicines management, ensuring timely responses and effective communication. Support the development and implementation of practice protocols, audits, and quality improvement activities. Maintain awareness of prescribing guidance, medication reviews, and commonly prescribed medicines to support continuity of patient care.

Primary key responsibilities:
The following are the core responsibilities of a Prescription Clerk in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
a.Support in the management of repeat prescriptions, ensuring they are processed accurately and efficiently
b.Accurately detail information on patients records within the clinical system
c.Process repeats prescription requests received by any means of communication in accordance with practice protocol
d.Produce prescriptions for the GP to sign in an acceptable timeframe
e.Ensure all prescription requests are processed and are ready for collection within the required and expected timeframe
f.Generate requests for medication on behalf of the patient for non-repeat items
g.Actively encourage patients to reconcile medications to facilitate monthly collections
h.Discuss with patients their requirements, encouraging patients to order only what they require
i.Act upon compliance issues, liaising with the appropriate clinician
j.Ensure medication reviews are arranged by maintaining an accurate recall system
k.Effectively liaise with external services, i.e., district nurses, to ensure medicaments are arranged for housebound patients
l.Initiate contact with and respond to, requests from patients, team members and external agencies
m.Manage all queries as necessary in an efficient manner
n.Conduct system searches as requested
p.Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
q.Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements
r.Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
s.Contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance
t.Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
u.Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed.
