Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Specialist

Band 6, £39,959 - £48,117 Per annum, pro rata
Hours: Part time, 30 hours per week, Fixed Term until 28 February 2027, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working
A temporary vacancy has arisen within Milton Keynes University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for a part time Band 6 Paediatric Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist.This vacancy is for a 9-month fixed term period and a great opportunity for personal and clinical skill development.
The successful candidate will be required to work in collaboration with our existing Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Paediatric Diabetes Consultants, children's services staff, AHPs, children, young people and their families.The role will predominantly deliver care and support to children and young people with T1 and T2 Diabetes at our hospital site and within their own homes/ communities.

Main duties of the job
We work closely with other specialists in and out of the hospital setting such as paediatricians, community nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, other Clinical Nurse Specialists and GPs to ensure we are always providing the best possible care.
We are looking for a highly motivated children's nurse who has experience with children and young people, training and educating parents/ carers and has a good understanding and experience of working with children with long term conditions.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent skills in communication, organisation and time management and will be expected to participate in and deliver regular clinical supervision, Appraisal and NMC Revalidation
Our Paediatric Diabetes service provides friendly, timely and high-quality care to children and young people who with diabetes. An empathetic and problem solving approach is essential when assessing and planning care. An ability to multi-task, effectively manage your own time and to co-ordinate the delivery of different care processes is essential.

The team prescribe, administer and teach parents/ carers how to calculate and administer correct amounts of insulin via different equipment including the hybrid closed loop system. Comprehensive care and escalation plans in partnership with the Diabetes MDT will also then be forumated. An ability to supervise others, teach and assess competency are essential.
The nursing team works closely with the Consultant team and attend regular MDT meetings for both Paediatric and transition services. Transition is a key period of change for our young people, and this is planned and supported by the nursing team. Good communication and the ability to work well across different teams is essential.
Our specialist nurses support patients and families with the emotional aspects of their condition, helping them to understand it and empowering them to deal with it effectively in their own environments.

Qualifications and knowledge Essential

Experience Essential
Able to evidence ability to work independently and also within a multidisciplinary team. Able to demonstrate successful implementation of effective evidence- based practice. Good understanding of governance and all it entails. Evidence of effective specialist development within this field, with a working knowledge of current local and national guidelines relating to best practice for children and young people with diabetes.
Desirable
A minimum of 3 years post qualification working in an acute paediatric speciality. Detailed experience in facilitation/ teaching/ assessing/ coaching. Experience of managing a defined caseload and ability to work under pressure to manage workload and meet deadlines. Experience of policy development
