Job summary

The Heart, Lung and Critical Care Clinical Group at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) is looking to appoint a substantive consultant cardiac electrophysiologist with a special interest in Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD). This is a replacement post to maintain deliver of electrophysiology and cardiac electronic device implantation as well as to support the growth and development of a cross site clinical and academic programme focused on the management of cardiac arrhythmias in adults with congenital heart disease.

The post-holder will be a fully trained and independent consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist. The individual will be able to perform outpatient clinics independently, run catheter laboratory electrophysiology intervention and device lists for investigation and treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias as well as participate in the Consultant of the Week and Arrhythmia on-call rotas. The successful candidate will support the catheter laboratories and wards by supervising the resident specialist trainees and clinical fellows in the day-to-day delivery of care. The post will involve close working with the Arrhythmia Clinical Nurse Specialists to prepare patients for their procedures and to coordinate inter-hospital transfers for treatment.

Main duties of the job

The post is a substantive 10 PA consultant appointment delivering a fixed weekly timetable across two sites (St Thomas' and Royal Brompton/ELCH), including catheter laboratory EP and device lists, Arrhythmia and ACHD MDTs, ACHD EP clinic, general outpatient clinics and ward cover. The post holder is also required to participate in the Consultant of the Week rota (1 in 27), the EP Consultant of the Week rota (1 in 7) and the Category A Arrhythmia on-call rota (1 in 7). This pattern of cross-site DCC commitments, fixed MDT attendance and three separate on-call rotas cannot be discharged on a less-than-full-time basis without creating gaps in scheduled lists, MDT representation and out-of-hours cover. LTFT working will be considered for the appointed candidate where compatible with service need, in line with the JD.

The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC full and specialist registration and hold a current licence to practise

Research, Teaching and Training

The post holder will collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trusts and the Colleges translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance. The postholder will be actively involved in the further development of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Research Programme with specific focus on Adult Congenital Heart Disease.

The post holder may be required to provide teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Lead and Clinical Director.

The post holder may be required to act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Director to ensure external accreditation of training post.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the training and support of doctors and physiologists in training.

Performance Management

The post holder will work with medical, nursing, laboratory and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:

Clinical efficiency e.g. LOS reductions, reducing cancelled interventions and DNA rates.

Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates, complaint response times.

Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.

Operational efficiency e.g. day-case rates, waiting list activity and demand management.

Maintaining and promoting a high level of proficiency with the use of the EPIC Electronic Patient Record

Medical Staff Management

The post holder will work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal. The post holder will participate in the recruitment of junior medical staff as and when required. Governance

The post holder will review their clinical outcomes against external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director. They will participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented. They will work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and services developments as delegated by the Clinical Director. They will participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed, implemented and monitored in the speciality areas. They will ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis. They will keep fully informed about best practice in their speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director. They will role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team. Strategy and Business Planning

The post holder will participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust where appropriate. They will represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Clinical Lead and Director. Leadership and Team Working

The post holder will demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national or local initiatives. They will work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Kings Health Partners as required. They will resolve conflict and difficult situations through negotiation and discussion, involving appropriate parties. They will adhere to Trust/departmental guidelines on leave including reporting absence.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training: Essential

MRCP or equivalent Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practice) with the GMC as holding a CCT in Cardiology or equivalent Full training in Electrophysiology

Clinical Experience Essential

Specialist training in Electrophysiology and devices. Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in cardiology. Independent device implantation including CRT and conduction system pacing ACHD arrhythmia clinical and interventional expertise Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision including independent arrhythmia ablation skills
