Job summary
You will join the palliative care team of Saint Francis Hospice to provide Consultant level expertise and care to the hospice ward team and the hospice community teams.
Saint Francis Hospice is situated in the village of Havering-atte-Bower, near the London/Essex border, just 4 miles from Romford. The hospice serves the people of outer East London also Brentwood in Southwest Essex, and the near parts of West Essex, providing 18 hospice beds. It also provides community palliative care services to Barking & Dagenham, Havering and Brentwood.
The hospice has an excellent reputation. It was awarded 'Outstanding' status at last CQC inspection. The hospice provides in house and regional training, with a strong commitment to staff and carer education, training and individual / team professional development. The hospice has an active quality projects/quality improvement programme and is in the process of developing 'Research Active' status, with consultants at the heart of education, quality and research.
Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust are the local hospitals trust. BHRUT holds the NHS contracts for all the Consultants in Palliative Care in the region.
This is fully seconded to the hospice/community for day-to-day work. The hospice/community and the BHRUT palliative care team work closely together and the postholder will be sharing in the region's consultant on call rota, which covers BHRUT hospitals, the hospice and the community out of hours.
Main duties of the job
provide Consultant level input into the hospice ward, in partnership with a consultant colleague. The postholder will lead and support non-consultant grade medics and the ward multidisciplinary team to deliver a holistic model of care for people with complex problems related to advanced or progressive life-limiting conditions. They will be a key member of the weekly ward MDT.
provide Consultant level input into the Community team, with clinical and strategic focus on one of the boroughs served by Saint Francis Hospice. To include direct visiting support for palliative care complexity and indirect support of colleagues in their provision of care to people with specialist palliative care needs, through clinical advice, education, and support with quality improvement initiatives.
contribute to the support, training and development of medical trainees/ medical learners and to the learning environment of the hospice/it's staff and external care providers.
be part of the regional Consultant on call service.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Full registration with the General Medical Council. MRCP, MRCGP, FRCA or equivalent qualification. Be on the specialist register for Palliative Medicine or be within six months of entry at the time of interview. Demonstrable knowledge of all aspects of specialist palliative care. Wide experience of specialist palliative care in different settings.
Desirable
Masters degree, or other higher degree in a relevant subject. Post graduate teaching diploma or similar. Poster(s) or presentation(s) at a regional, national, or international forum. Research publications. Evidence of clear area of interest relevant to BHRUT and/or hospice (+/- national) strategy.
