Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Haematology / Oncology Team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals trust as a trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP).

The tACP in Acute Oncology will support the medical and nursing teams in the management of Haematology and Oncology patients and will undertake reviews of patients within the Acute Oncology Assessment Bay, chemotherapy units and outlier wards. They will provide support for the Haematology and Oncology medical teams working across county, working to agreed protocols and guidelines ensuring an efficient, effective and patient-focused service. They will also support the Lead ACP in developing the Acute oncology service at Worcestershire Hospitals NHS Trust as part of the 10-year Cancer plan.

The applicant must be willing to undertake a Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice and have experience with SACT and qualifications in health assessment and non-medical prescribing in haematology and oncology.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will practice autonomously as a trainee advanced practitioner within the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) to provide patient-centred clinical care, encompassing the skills of advanced clinical assessment, examination, diagnosis and treatment within an agreed scope of practice throughout the AOS.

The post holder will demonstrate a high level of expertise within the AO Service, providing advice, education, and support to staff, patients, their families and carers.

Support the AOS Lead ACP in the responsibility for leading the on-going development of clinical practice and standards of care within the service, including the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines in collaboration with multi-disciplinary colleagues

The post holder will support new ways of working that emphasises a more efficient, effective, and patient-focused service ensuring safe referral and discharge of patients as appropriate.

Deputise for the Lead Nurse for the Acute Oncology Service, this includes the nurse practitioners, Acute Oncology Helpline and In-reach Services across the two Acute sites (Worcestershire Royal Hospital and The Alexandra Hospital, Redditch).

Job description Job responsibilities

Work autonomously as a trainee Advanced Practitioner within the speciality, managing a caseload of patients delivering individualised direct patient care.

Support the AOS Lead ACP in the development and expansion of the AOS Advanced and Nurse Clinical Practitioner Service within the specialist area with management responsibility for additional team members.

A knowledgeable tACP, supporting staff, service and policy development within a defined area/specialty.

Provide and maintain expert knowledge and practice in venepuncture, cannulation, central venous devices, chemotherapy drugs and biological therapies.

Responsible for identifying and assessing complex clinical and non-clinical issues, implementing resolutions and monitoring/auditing outcomes.

Undertake highly specialised technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including complex patient monitoring; chemotherapy reviews and assessments; equipment management and defined expanded clinical roles.

Accountable for own actions in accordance with Code of Professional Conduct.

Will contribute towards corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies always.

Highly developed communication skills enabling maintenance of high-quality service and ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations.

Contribute to specialist forums and National initiatives.

Identify areas for nursing research, sources of funding and initiate research projects.

Regularly manage expected and unexpected clinical events relating to Acute Oncology emergencies requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.

Support patients, carers and staff during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. breaking bad news or following an unexpected event.

Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.

Provide reports to the Service Lead as requested.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Registered Healthcare Professional [e.g., Nurse, Pharmacist, Allied Health Professional] with relevant regulatory body (NMC, HCPC, GPhC). Independent Prescribing qualification (V300) Health assessment qualification

Desirable

Working towards Masters degree in advanced Practice or equivalent. Postgraduate qualification in specialist field. Acute Oncology Course / education

Skills / Knowledge Essential

Evidence of assessment, diagnostic, and clinical decision-making skills. Ability to manage complex patient presentations. Knowledge of evidence-based practice and clinical governance.
