Job SummaryThis position of Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor is located in the Utilities Systems Section of the Facilities Management Service at VA Connecticut Healthcare System, West Haven Campus.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Inspect Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Lead or Supervise Materials Technical Practices Troubleshooting Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Major DutiesMajor Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to: Plans, directs, lays out, assigns, coordinates, and supervises work performed by WG-10 Pipefitters and WG-09 Plumbers. This includes having extensive knowledge of mechanical equipment, in-depth knowledge of construction procedures and how to apply this knowledge in the alterations of buildings and installation of Plumbing Systems, Medical Gas and Vacuum Systems, Steam and Condensate Systems (0 - 110 psi), Domestic Water, Sewer Systems, and Mechanical Equipment. Also, a good knowledge of maintenance and repair performance, by a journeyman mechanic. System types shall include industrial, commercial, medical, and residential. Responsible for inspecting the plumbing, sewer, steam and condensate, medical gases, mechanical machinery, and equipment for determining their condition and recommending present and future corrective measures that may be necessary to the Utilities Systems Supervisor to ensure continuous service. Consults with and advises Service Chiefs regarding installation, operation, maintenance, or repair of systems and equipment. Is responsible for creating, updating, and implementation of Preventative maintenance Program for this unit. The employee must continuously monitor and complete all PMI's and provide documentation as required by JCAHO and other inspecting bodies. Reading drawings and overcoming difficulties encountered within applying the drawings to the jobsite, check drawings, and order all materials needed to complete minor construction projects. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday- 7:00 am - 3:30 p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor/PD029030 Physical Requirements: The employee is required to do considerable walking while making inspections of work under his/her supervision. Work requires stooping, bending, and reaching. Must be able to use arms and legs for prolonged periods of time. The majority of work is performed in a clean, well-lighted environment.
