PRN Rotate
The Clinical Laboratory Assistant – Phlebotomist performs routine technical and clerical functions. The CLA performs venipuncture - capillary puncture, labels tubes and specimen containers, specimen receipt and distribution of laboratory specimens; may perform CLIA waived laboratory tests. The lab assistant – phlebotomist completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period.
General Functions:
• Performs venous and capillary phlebotomy • Maintains specimen integrity and follows proper labeling protocols for specimens’ tubes/containers • Processes blood and other body fluids for various analyses to be performed by either BHS or reference laboratories. • Tests specimens, under general supervision, for clinical studies in accordance with established BHS policies and procedures • Reports lab results accurately and responsively, recognizing abnormal or unexpected results, errors and problems with patient tests. • Inputs and retrieves data from the laboratory computer system. • Performs basic clerical functions • Assists in stocking and maintaining laboratory supply inventory • Assists with training phlebotomists or laboratory students • Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively • Maintains safe environment • Addresses patient population-specific needs obtaining blood specimens for all age groups served. • Participates in Performance Improvement activities. • Uses, maintains and cleans laboratory equipment and uses protective equipment to protect from exposure to chemicals, radiation and infectious hazards. • Is knowledgeable of emergency procedures.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School Graduate or equivalent PREFERRED EDUCATION: Completion of a Phlebotomy program PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Six months of hospital lab assistant - phlebotomy experience #LI-JH5
