Math Support Teacher Trainer

Project Description: Calling all math educators! Schools in Saint Lucia are seeking your skills to support K-6 math achievement.

The pandemic impacted student learning, and schools across the island are still trying to catch up. A recovery plan is in effect to strengthen the capacity of educators in teaching math, with the goal of attaining grade level among primary students and an increase in one grade level for struggling students.

As Math Support Teacher Trainer, you will collaborate with education officers, school principals, and teachers to strengthen staff capacity. Through your interactions with colleagues and community members, you will also enhance intercultural understanding between the people of Saint Lucia and Americans.

Required Skills: Competitive candidates will have one or more of the following criteria:

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Science/STEM field, or Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in relevant field (e.g., education) with certification or significant relevant experience in STEM OR 2 or more years of relevant teaching experience OR 2 or more years of specialized experience in one of the following areas: Math, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Biology, Earth Sciences, or Art

Living Conditions: Volunteers live in houses or apartments and take a bus to their workplace. Some housing may be stand alone and some may be within family home structures.

Activities: Conduct assessment of teachers to determine training needs. Train teachers in conducting student assessments and analyzing data. Facilitate workshops in best practices for teaching math. Create appropriate teaching and learning resources to enhance lesson planning and delivery. Guide and support staff in creating individualized plans for students. Support implementation of teaching and learning action plans based on student assessment data. Develop and facilitate professional learning communities for primary school teachers.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as after-school sports and clubs.

Training: After a 3-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to a community where you will collaborate with a primary school. You will work with the partner and your community to assess the local needs and develop a work plan in line with their established goals.

Peace Corps/Eastern Caribbean will equip you with Creole language resources and you may work with a local tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
