Digital Learning Specialist
Project Description: University students in Guinea are eager to learn English and basic computer skills with your support.
There is a shortage of English teachers in Guinea. Schools often focus on ensuring students pass exams to advance to the next grade. Theory and grammar are prioritized over utility and effective communication. Traditional teaching approaches offer limited bi-directional interactions and lack research-based practices to adequately support all learners, which can severely limit critical thinking skills and creativity.
As a Digital Learning Specialist, you will collaborate with the university staff to foster student-centered, practice-based learning experiences that develop the students’ English competencies and computer literacy. Together, you will implement a fun, participatory, and hands-on approach to learning that will inspire students to innovate, inspire, and lead their communities with a different way of thinking.
Required Skills: Bachelor of Arts plus 3 or more years of relevant experience, including teaching and curriculum development, and teaching certification/license OR Master of Arts in related field plus 2 or more years of relevant experience AND Specialized experience in one of the following areas: Early Childhood; Literacy; Adult English Ed; Vocational English Ed; or Special Education
Living Conditions: Volunteers will be provided housing in an urban community near the university. The Volunteer can expect the housing to include a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen, and basic furniture.
Activities: Participate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TEFL) curriculum and syllabus planning. Curate and develop a variety of teaching aids to improve English learning. Teach lessons on internet research and basic computer skills. Grade students’ evaluations and provide feedback. Identify opportunities to promote inter-colleague learning and development. Develop activities that are mutually beneficial for the university and surrounding community.
You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as a movie club or a website development workshop.
Training: After a two-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to an urban community where you will collaborate with the university staff. You will work together to assess the local needs and develop a work plan in line with their established goals.
Peace Corps/Guinea will equip you with French language resources and you may work with a local tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
