About this role

Project Description: Whether you're a recent graduate, mid-career professional, or retiree, you can make a real impact on English education in Montenegro.

Montenegro is prioritizing English language learning, as its economy relies heavily on the tourism industry. Although the country is small, development is uneven across regions. English proficiency is increasingly essential for educational, employment, and global opportunities. Many schools—particularly in rural areas—face challenges, such as limited access to modern teaching resources and a lack of student-centered methodologies, which can hinder effective language acquisition and classroom engagement.

As an English Teacher, you’ll address these gaps by teaching alongside local teachers, supporting students’ language and life skills development, and broadening learning opportunities to the surrounding community. Your collaborative work will enhance English proficiency, promote innovative teaching practices, and foster mutual understanding. You’ll contribute to the country's educational reform and global integration goals while developing your own personal and professional skills.

Required Skills: Bachelor's degree in any discipline.

Living Conditions: Volunteers often live in small, underserved communities. All Volunteers in Montenegro will live with host families during their initial pre-service training and the first six months of their service. Volunteers are provided a small space heater for their bedroom.

Activities: Plan and teach interactive English lessons that support various proficiencies and learning styles. Design and facilitate special events or activities for English language learning, such as spelling bees or international writing competitions. Organize extracurricular activities for youth, such as camps, clubs, and mentoring programs. Develop and implement projects to improve school facilities or involve the community in student learning.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as after-school sports, creative arts clubs, or digital literacy classes.

Training: As an English Teacher, you will be trained to support English teachers and facilitate student learning. Peace Corps/Albania and Montenegro will teach you Montenegrin to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community. You will also receive language resources and, may also learn Albanian, depending on where you are assigned.

After 11 weeks of training, you will move to rural or semi-urban community where you will collaborate with elementary, middle, or secondary schools. You will work with the community to assess the local needs and develop solutions based on community needs and assets.

Job Highlights: Receive practical, high-quality training that equips you to teach English anywhere. Gain project management, leadership, and intercultural collaboration skills transferable to any profession. Learn Montenegrin, a blend of Serbian, Bosnian, and Croatian languages, and used across the majority of the Western Balkan region.
