English Teacher
Project Description: Recent university graduates interested in teaching English and working with young people are encouraged to serve in Albania.
English language education has become a priority in Albania as the country strives to join the European Union. Students and parents alike are highly motivated to strengthen their English skills as the language can expand educational and employment opportunities. With the recent reforms at the Ministry of Education, the government aims to bring quality education and better implementation of policies and strategies to even the most remote areas.
As an English Teacher, you will collaborate with community members to support teachers, students, and the surrounding community develop language skills. Together, you will create fun and engaging learning opportunities to develop English proficiencies.
Required Skills: Bachelor's degree in any discipline.
Living Conditions: Volunteers are placed throughout Albania and often live in small, underserved communities. All Volunteers in Albania will live with host families during their initial pre-service training and the first six months of their service. Volunteers are provided a small space heater for their bedroom.
Activities: Plan and teach English lessons alongside your teacher counterpart. Design and facilitate special events or activities to improve English language skills, such as spelling bee competitions. Organize extracurricular activities focusing on youth development, such as camps, clubs and mentoring. Plan and facilitate events that promote student empowerment through student government. Design and implement projects to improve school facilities or involve the community in student learning. You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as after-school clubs and summer camps.
Training: As an English Teacher, you will be trained to support local teachers in teaching English as a second language and facilitate student learning. Peace Corps/Albania and Montenegro will teach you Albanian to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community. You will also receive supplemental language learning resources.
After 11 weeks of training, you will move to rural or semi-urban community where you will collaborate with elementary, middle, or secondary schools. You will work with the community to assess the local needs and develop solutions based on community needs and assets.
