Main duties of the job

To support the education and professional development of clinical and non-clinical staff across RSHFT and Community hospitals where appropriate in relation to manual handling.

The key responsibility of this post is toCoordinate and assist in the delivery of manual handling training programmes for the Trust as detailed:Moving and handling Level 1Moving and handling Level 2Moving and Handling Level 3Provide specialist advice to clinicians within sphere of competence regarding manual handling

Co-ordinate and deliver effective and engaging manual handling training and contribute to the development of new training and materials and courses.When required, work with the MH Lead to ensure a standardised and cohesive approach to manual handling across the trust and seek opportunities to be updated by this team in relation to the handling equipment available.Attend the South Back Care exchange meetings and be responsible for disseminating and implementing any pertinent information if this affects manual handling within the trust (including Community sites).Provide support to staff regarding non-complex manual handling cases and understand the process of how to access the MH Lead for complex cases.Coordinate and deliver bespoke manual handling training within specialist manual handling fields such as paediatric and specialist dentistry.Ensure lifting equipment is serviced as required in line with LOLER regulations and other equipment is fit for purpose and safe.

Job description Job responsibilities

To meet with the MH Lead and Health and Safety team to ensure routes of clear communication.Network with other manual handling teams and internal and external stakeholders within the region to share knowledgeEffectively and competently provide advice, instruction or training to groups, appropriately tailoring to individual and differing needs.Proficiently and appropriately use skills of negotiation, persuasion, and tact.Keep accurate training records, ensuring that these are disseminated to the statutory and mandatory training administration team.Instigate and participate in audits on training as required, writing concise and robust training reports with support from the Manual Handling Lead.Keep fully up to date with health and safety legislation, directives, policies and procedures and be compliant with statutory and mandatory training requirements.

Be able to appropriately delegate and effectively manage workload/actions that enable service deliveryProvide advice within the scope and sphere of their profession and speciality.Appropriately liaise, refer and coordinate activities with other professionals or agencies.Respond to the investigation of Datix incident under the direction of Manual Handling Lead providing re-education and TILEE guidance.

Evaluate the standard of manual handling training to ensure a consistent approach is achieved and that continuous improvements take place in line with changes in research and national guidelines.Attend meetings as required to contribute to discussions on patient safety and health and safety.Co-ordinate and contribute to the development of a range of clinical manual handling training programmes for staff, setting up venues for both classrooms and in-situ training.Coordinate and analyse feedback from manual handling training programmes implementing under the guidance of the manual handling lead any amendments.

Contribute to and participate in any reviews of any policies where manual handling may constitute an element, recommending changes in line with national best practice and guidelines issued by the National Back Pain Association and the National Back Exchange.Contribute to the development of guidelines, Standard operating procedure/ protocols and competencies for practice.Under the direction of the manual handling lead, ensure that there is sufficient training provision for Manual Handling training.

Research and developmentProvide high-quality evidence-based training across RSHFT and when appropriate, external to the organisationEnsures that any advice given to non-clinicians and clinicians is evidence based.Ensures that any contributions to trust documents (policies, SOPs guidelines) are evidence based

Freedom to actThe post holder will be able to plan their workload under the direction of the manual handling lead.The postholder can act autonomously within their sphere of competence making decisions in all non-complex and some complex situations however will be required to report regularly these decisions to the manual handling lead.

Provide robust line management responsibilities to junior staff within the teamProvide supervision for junior staffConsiders financial efficiency and resourcing when making decisions regarding procurement of supplies.Understand the processes involved in maintaining stock control/ ordering supplies, such as equipment and activity materials, within delegated authority.

Physical, Mental and Emotional EffortDue to the nature of this role the post holder will be required to frequently move objects which includes pushing and pulling objects between 6 and 10 kilos, moving patients with mechanical aids over 15 kilos, and maneuvering patients for treatment or personal care purposes.

Consequently, the postholder must be physically fit to fulfil the required components of the role.

Qualifications Desirable

Teaching qualification AET level 3 or above or experience working in a teaching capacity

Knowledge and Experience Essential

Experienced in working in a care environment providing physical assistance to a variety of clients. Sound clinical knowledge underpinned by evidence of theoretical understanding in patient moving and handling equipment, manual handling and individual needs Sound understanding of risk assessment and delegation principles Evidence of continued professional development

Experience of teaching to a multidisciplinary workforce
