Job summary

The Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is committed to providing high quality services to the diverse population of Hackney. The Trust provides comprehensive hospital and community health services for its local catchment area including obstetrics, bariatric surgery, tertiary level fetal medicine, neonatology and fertility. The anaesthetic department is the first in the UK to receive an Anaesthesia Clinical Service Accreditation.

The North East London Bariatric Surgical Unit at the Homerton serves the largest number of patients in the UK. It was established in 2003 and has developed into one of the leading reputed centres in bariatric surgery in the country. There is a dedicated bariatric theatre with approximately 10-15 major bariatric cases each week.

Applicants are invited to apply for a fellowship in bariatric anaesthesia. This fixed term appointment would suit those wishing to further their expertise in bariatric and / or obstetric anaesthesia. Alongside developing clinical acumen and participating in research, the post holder will gain skills essential to perform as a consultant within the NHS.

Main duties of the job

The post is aimed at an anaesthetist who is looking to gain clinical and research experience in the field of bariatric anaesthesia. Dedicated training time would be provided within bariatric anaesthesia at the Homerton. The post holder will regularly work with the bariatric surgical teams and will have the opportunity to be involved in pre-op assessment, the multi-disciplinary team meetings and post-operative care.

The appointee will be required to take responsibility with his/her colleagues in the provision of a full anaesthetic service to the trust. Routine duties include providing peri operative care for patients in the trust including pre and postoperative visits. He or she will carry out anaesthetic duties at a level appropriate to clinical experience and competence which will also determine the degree of supervision. On call duties include providing anaesthetic services for obstetrics on a full shift rota. The on-call registrar team provides emergency anaesthetic cover for theatres and the pain service 24 hours a day. Duties of the post may be subject to change due to reconfiguration of services within the trust.

The post holder will be responsible to a nominated consultant and the Clinical Director of the department and will be expected to work with consultants to maintain standards, education and develop skills.

Qualifications and Training Essential

FRCA or equivalent MB BS or equivalent Evidence of audit and or research

Desirable

CCT ALS, ATLS, APLS Good Medical Practice Certificate

Previous experience Essential

Experience of working obstetric and ICM on call Equivalent to ST5 level at time of application Able to independently treat, resuscitate and stabilize the vast majority of critically-ill patients and able to seek advice and help appropriately
