Job summary

We invite applications for our Consultant in Emergency & General Surgery vacancy. The post holders will join the existing Surgical Team delivering care in the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU).

The post is full time comprising 11 Programmed Activities (PAs).

The Trust is committed to the NHS policy of Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC). The post holder will have an important role, in partnership with whole General surgical team in further developing the Unit in line with SDEC. The Department is reviewing all roles.

This post has been developed to reflect the Royal College of Surgeons guidance on NHS Surgical Consultant Job Descriptions, June 2016.

Main duties of the job

The appointed Consultant will be part of a team of 6 SEU consultants who, between them will support the emergency service from Monday-Friday covering CEPOD operating (07:30-13:30hrs), Emergency Surgery Ambulatory Clinics and "Hot Clinics" (09:00-13:00hrs)

They will provide frontline consultant cover for emergency surgical admissions and supervise/guide junior Emergency Surgical Team (EST) staff in the management of acute surgical admissions in SEU/A&E (13:30-20:30) and planned CEPOD operating.

Currently, EST on-call duties are provided by these consultants on Tuesday and Thursday nights 8pm-8am. The outline Job Plan will incorporate specialty interest elective commitments & provision for Consultants career/development in one of the Trusts' subspecialties.

We will integrate in the SEU consultants working with the EST.

The SEU consultant maintains ownership of their emergency and elective patients.

The current Emergency Surgical Team on call system template works with10 Consultants (6 Colorectal Consultants, 4 UGI Consultants.) 10 SPRs, 10 SHOs and 10 F1s on a rolling Rota.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

FRCS or equivalent registration Full GMC registration Possession of CTT or within six months of receipt at the date of interview

Experience Essential

A wide grounding during training of all aspects of emergency surgery Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates Understand principles and participated in audit activity Understand the principles of Clinical Governance and demonstrate experience of evidence-based practice. Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems

Desirable

Evidence of Research Activity or Higher Degree Completion of recognised College specialty training in sub-speciality Completion of teaching course Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals. Experience of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy Emergency surgery course

Specific Competencies Essential

Able to evaluate own clinical practice. Able to demonstrate innovative thinking Good written and oral communication skills. Be able to work effectively in a team. Able to demonstrate effective leadership skills. Ability to organise and develop service provision. Have a commitment to working within Trust policies and procedures as guided by the Clinical Director. Have a commitment to Continuing Medical Education / Continuing Professional Development.
