Job summary

The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a locum Consultant to the cross-site surgical team, with the post based predominantly at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital site

The successful candidates will deliver predominantly Upper GI Surgery but will also support the emergency general surgery service

Please confirm your elective speciality interest in your application and at interview as there is some potential flexibility in this regard

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have a subspecialty interest in Upper GI surgery, with experience in at least one of the following areas: Upper GI including hot biliary, complex benign upper GI surgery, or bariatric surgery. The post holder will work collaboratively within a highly supportive multidisciplinary team, maintaining and strengthening existing working relationships across surgical, medical, nursing, and allied health colleagues.

In addition, he/she will be included in the General Surgery on-call nights/weekends rota. This will still provide ample opportunity for elective work in accordance with the post-holders' subspecialty interest - with specific time allocated for ongoing personal development in their chosen field. In particular, support will be given to areas of innovation in improving the quality of patient care, with focus on reduced length of stay and increased ambulatory care.

Job description Job responsibilities

Provide consultant care in the elective and emergency general surgery service across a range of procedures To undertake to operate on and turn over patients at a speed comparable with peers to allow optimum usage of the operating theatres To participate in outpatient clinics Deliver consultant review of all non-elective admissions review within 12 hours of admission Promote early and safe discharge, including the use of community providers to reduce length of stay Develop new innovative communication pathways with GPs and patients. Person Specification

Knowledge and Skills Essential

Solid understanding of the Clinical Governance Agenda IT proficiency including, email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint Evidence of effective audit leading to change

Research Essential

Demonstrates an understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research Peer reviewed publications

Management Essential

A good understanding of the role of clinical management

Desirable

Evidence of contribution in the development of new clinical services Completion of dedicated leadership training
