Job summary

The Royal Surrey is seeking to appoint a Theatres Operation Manager within the Trusts Surgical Division. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced operational manager that will help deliver efficient, effective and high-quality patient centred services. They will provide strategic planning, service development and driving innovation, modernisation and high levels of staff and patient satisfaction.

This is an exciting time to join the Surgical Division within the Royal Surrey: we provide a large range of surgical services to our local population, as well as delivering extensive regional cancer services. We have one of the largest multi-disciplinary surgical robotic programmes nationally in conjunction with a high quality critical care service.

This year we will complete the building of the Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre at our Guildford site (the Royal Surrey Hospital), which will provide six new operating theatres and well as brand new recovery and admission areas. The role will be part of the senior team responsible delivering patient pathways to ensure effective patient flow across the new Surgical Cancer and Innovation Centre and existing main theatre environment.

Main duties of the job

As Theatre Operations Manager, you will play a key leadership role in delivering safe, efficient and high-quality surgical services across our operating theatres. Working closely with clinical colleagues, you will lead day-to-day operations, ensuring excellent patient flow, maximising theatre utilisation, and delivering performance against key national targets.

You will drive service improvement, lead and develop teams, and ensure effective use of workforce and financial resources. You will also champion innovation and transformation, helping to modernise services and improve patient outcomes.

With a strong focus on quality and governance, you will oversee performance, manage risks, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards, while providing visible and proactive operational leadership across the theatres service.

The Theatre Operations Manager is jointly responsible along with the Clinical Director and Theatre Matron for providing leadership and operational management of the operating theatres. This post is accountable to the Head of Service for Theatres, Anaesthetics & Critical Care, working together to ensure efficient and effectively delivery of elective + non-elective surgical services whilst maintaining high-quality patient care.

The post is responsible for the leadership, coordination and operation management of the operating theatres and is responsible for monitoring and delivering Theatre performance across all specialties against national and local targets. Demonstrating this through the theatres Specialist Business Unit within the Surgery Division, with the post playing a key role in identifying opportunities for clinical innovation and modernisation, the delivery of operational performance targets, financial management, theatre capacity management.

Strategic Responsibility

Working with the Clinical Director and Theatre Matron provide leadership to the SBU to ensure the effective delivery of clinical and non - clinical services.

Lead & Support the development of the Theatres SBUs strategic direction in line with Trust Strategy and prioritises.

To work with and provide support to the Service Managers across the Surgery Division to develop short, medium and long-term objectives which in turn are affordable and achievable annual service plans for the theatre SBU and the portfolio, and deliver these plans within the financial resources available.

Formulate new service development initiatives, ensuring business cases are produced, taking into account Trust governance and standing financial instruction, activity and income projections.

Lead Quality Improvement projects including working in partnership with colleagues from other divisions within the Trust, and from partner organisations outside the Trust.

Develop robust mechanisms to ensure clear communication of service plans, objectives and service changes within the SBU ensuring that staff are engaged directly in any review and development of services.

Develops and maintains effective communication systems within theatres and across the Trust, as well as with external partners, ensuring timely decision-making, confidentiality of sensitive information, and protection of the Trusts reputation, especially in high-pressure or escalated situations

Participate in the Surgical Management duty rota working closely with the Admissions team and Site Nurse Practitioners in ensuring that all surgical patients are placed appropriately and that elective services are both patient and organisation focused.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Degree or equivalent professional qualification Evidence of continuous professional development Project Management qualification or equivalent training/ experience

Desirable

Master's degree in healthcare or management or demonstrable ability to work at Masters level

Knowledge and Experience Essential

Operating Theatre management experience Understanding of the complexity of cancer services Service quality and quality management Current changes and developments within the NHS Change management theory

Desirable

Strong financial aptitude and a demonstrable track record of managing budgets and developing business cases Previous experience of managing complex services Experience of delivering change within the NHS
