Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Gastroenterologist or Consultant Hepatology within the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. This is a new post to support increased demand for our secondary and tertiary care services. Applicants with sub-specialty interests are encouraged to apply and there are opportunities to support and enhance services across the breadth of Gastroenterology.
You will join an enthusiastic and cohesive team of 16 Consultant Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists working in one of the largest acute hospitals in the country, serving a catchment population of approximately 675,000 people.
The new University of Portsmouth Medical School opened in September 2024 and there are excellent opportunities for teaching and clinical research.
Main duties of the job
Portsmouth provides easy access to beautiful countryside including the South Downs and New Forest National Parks. There are excellent seaside and sailing facilities and the city is only an hour and a half from central London. The area offers all the lifestyle opportunities of metropolitan, rural and coastal life.
The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003. Applicants should be on the GMC specialist register via CCT, CESR or European Community Rights.

Job description Job responsibilities
Consultant clinics for new starters consist of 4 new and 8 follow up patients, with no requirement to supervise a registrar, for at least 6 months or until the first job plan review.
Endoscopy lists are 4 hours and booked according to JAG standards (currently 12 activity points per list). The procedures are booked as per the competencies of the consultant and the rota is written to accommodate the different skillsets of the consultants whilst delivering an appropriate and timely service.
The job includes 2 PA of SPA during which the candidate will be expected to complete activities required for revalidation, continuing professional development and audit and supporting the department with educational supervision or other required activities.

Qualifications Essential
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice - MRCP or equivalent
Desirable
- Higher Degree (e.g. MD/PhD) - Sub-specialty accreditation in Hepatology
Experience Essential
Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT in Gastroenterology (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights Wide experience of gastroenterology and general internal medicine JAG certified training in upper and lower GI endoscopy
Desirable
Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT in General Internal Medicine (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights Experience of service development
