Job summary

Rowan Ward is a 15bed mixed gender acute mental health ward based at the Summerlands Site in Yeovil and includes a Health Based Place of Safety. The ward is AIMS accredited and has recently successfully undergone reaccreditation. We are also in the process of developing an additional purpose built acute ward on site, making this an exciting time to join the service.

As a Band 5 Staff Nurse, you will be a key member of a multi disciplinary team delivering high quality, compassionate care to adults experiencing acute mental health difficulties. You will work collaboratively and innovatively, applying the principles of engagement, recovery, and positive and proactive care to improve patient experience and outcomes.

Main duties of the job

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised care for service users experiencing acute mental health difficulties.Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in accordance with legislation, best practice and Trust values.Deliver compassionate, recoveryfocused care using therapeutic engagement and evidencebased interventions.Monitor and respond to changes in mental and physical health, escalating concerns appropriately.Administer medication safely and in line with Trust policy, professional standards and legal frameworks.Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, service users, families and carers to support recovery.Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive clinical records.Support and supervise healthcare support workers, students and junior colleagues as required.

Job description Job responsibilities

As a Staff Nurse on Rowan Ward, you will take responsibility for the clinical care of designated service users, ensuring care is delivered safely, respectfully and in line with professional and organisational standards. You will build and maintain purposeful therapeutic relationships, demonstrating sensitivity and empathy when working with individuals who may be experiencing extreme distress, risk or crisis.

The role requires confidence, approachability and emotional resilience, as you will often support people during the most acute and challenging phase of their recovery journey. You will apply the philosophies of engagement, recovery, and positive and proactive care in all aspects of your practice, encouraging hope, empowerment and participation in care planning.

You will work closely with the wider multidisciplinary team, including psychology, occupational therapy and medical colleagues, contributing to effective risk management, care coordination and discharge planning. As part of a supportive ward culture, you will manage competing demands, participate in reflective practice, and contribute to a positive team environment focused on learning, collaboration and staff wellbeing.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Relevant degree or equivalent qualification Registered Mental Health Nurse Appropriately registered with the NMC as per post requirements

Desirable

Teaching/Assessor qualificationEvidence of continuing professional development and to have undertaken post registration training

Experience Desirable

Experience of working in multi-agency services

Additional Criteria Essential

Required to develop knowledge base in line with the KSF requirements for the postMust be a car driver with a valid driving licence or have access to transport with appropriate business insurance in order to travel throughout the Trust, to meet the needs of the service
