Job Description: Machines / fabricates prototype and replacement parts for equipment, machines and weapon systems of various types and alloys. Makes repairs to machinery, mechanical equipment and/or optical equipment. Interprets verbal and written instructions and specifications; planning and laying out of work, using a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments. Uses various design software such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and Computer-aided Manufacturing (CAM) software to model cutting paths and program tool changers. Programs, sets up and operates manual and CNC machine tools; machines and shapes metal parts to close tolerances; makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining. Demonstrates knowledge of the working properties of the common metals; selects standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work; and fitting and assembling parts into mechanical equipment and machines; and making all necessary adjustments to complete repairs. Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs; maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; maintaining equipment and supplies. Provides iterative feedback to customers. Shares work progress and information with fellow machinists. Performs other duties as required to complete the assigned mission. This position is covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
