About this role

Job summary We are seeking an experienced, credible and motivated midwife to undertake the role of Lead midwife for Education and Training here at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals. The post holder will promote evidence-based learning and will lead the Maternity Education Team in implementing and teaching on specific modules, simulation and inter-professional education to support the full implementation of Maternity Core Competency Framework Version 2 and Maternity Incentive Scheme educational elements. They will be responsible for supporting and developing the maternity education department and will lead, promote, and facilitate a safe and positive learning environment and culture for all maternity staff groups. They will identify any gaps in the provision of education and training and be instrumental in the development and implementation of new education programmes, ensuring local and national service objectives are included within the local maternity education strategy. The post holder will report and represent the Trust Maternity services to NHSE, ICB, HEI and at corporate level meetings, fostering strong system links and influencing midwifery education agenda at all levels. Working 37.5 hours per week Monday- Friday. We welcome flexible working requests.

Main duties of the job We are seeking an experienced, innovative and motivated senior midwife to join our maternity leadership team as Lead Midwife for Education and Training. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of maternity education, workforce development and patient safety across our service. As the strategic lead for maternity education and training, you will be responsible for developing, delivering and evaluating a comprehensive education programme that supports excellence in maternity and neonatal care. Working closely with the Director of Midwifery, Head of Midwifery, governance teams, Higher Education Institutions and system partners, you will ensure our workforce is equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence required to deliver safe, evidence-based and compassionate care. The successful candidate will lead the maternity education team and oversee all aspects of mandatory, statutory and continuing professional development training. You will ensure compliance with national frameworks including the Maternity Core Competency Framework, Maternity Incentive Scheme requirements and other national maternity safety initiatives. You will play a key role in creating a positive learning culture that encourages professional development, continuous improvement and shared learning across the multidisciplinary team.

This is a senior leadership role within the maternity service, responsible for leading and developing the education and training agenda across maternity and neonatal services. The post holder will work closely with clinical, governance and operational teams to ensure all staff have access to high-quality education, training and development opportunities that support safe, effective and compassionate care.The Lead Midwife for Education and Training will provide strategic and operational leadership for the maternity education team and will be responsible for ensuring compliance with national maternity training requirements, professional standards and local organisational objectives. This includes leading the development, implementation and evaluation of educational programmes that support workforce capability, clinical competence and continuous improvement.Key responsibilities include: Leading the planning, delivery and evaluation of maternity education and training programmes across the service. Developing and implementing the maternity education strategy in line with local priorities and national maternity policies. Ensuring compliance with statutory, mandatory and role-specific training requirements. Supporting implementation of the Maternity Core Competency Framework, Maternity Incentive Scheme requirements and national maternity safety programmes. Leading simulation training, multidisciplinary learning and skills and drills programmes to improve patient safety and team performance. Undertaking training needs analyses and developing educational programmes to address identified gaps in knowledge, skills and competence. Monitoring, analysing and reporting training compliance and workforce development metrics to senior leadership and governance groups. Working collaboratively with governance and patient safety teams to ensure learning from incidents, investigations, audits and service reviews is translated into educational initiatives and improvements in practice. Providing leadership, supervision and professional support to members of the maternity education team. Managing allocated budgets and resources effectively to maximise educational opportunities and value for money. Developing strong partnerships with Higher Education Institutions, NHS England, Integrated Care Systems, professional bodies and other external stakeholders. Representing the Trust at local, regional and national meetings relating to maternity education, workforce development and patient safety. Supporting the development of a positive learning culture where staff feel valued, supported and empowered to continuously develop their knowledge and skills. Contributing to quality improvement initiatives and service developments that enhance outcomes for women, babies and families. Producing high-quality reports, presentations and assurance documentation for governance and leadership forums. Maintaining professional registration, clinical credibility and continuing professional development in line with regulatory requirements.This role requires a visible leadership presence across maternity services. The successful candidate will be expected to build strong relationships with colleagues across all professional groups and act as an advocate for learning, professional development and excellence in maternity care.Core HoursThis is a full-time position, typically working 37.5 hours per week. Working hours will usually be undertaken during normal business hours, Monday to Friday; however, flexibility is required to meet the needs of the service.The post holder will be expected to support the delivery of education and training across a range of clinical settings and may occasionally be required to work outside standard office hours to facilitate training programmes, simulation exercises, staff development events or service requirements.As a senior member of the maternity leadership team, there is an expectation of regular visibility within clinical areas to support staff, promote learning and maintain an understanding of operational challenges and educational needs.The role will involve a combination of office-based work, attendance at meetings, clinical engagement and training delivery.
