Job summary

This post is for Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons with a specialist interest in hip and hip revision surgery, supporting existing substantive Consultants in delivering high-quality elective and trauma orthopaedic care across the full patient pathway.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering elective hip arthroplasty, including primary and complex revision procedures, alongside contributing to trauma services, particularly the management of fragility fractures and neck of femur patients. The role will include inpatient, day case, and outpatient activity, as well as participation in multidisciplinary team working to support optimal patient outcomes.

These are locum posts initially offered on a 12-month fixed-term basis within the Musculoskeletal & Specialist Surgery Clinical Management Group (MSS CMG). The majority of services are based at Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital, and Glenfield Hospital, with trauma on-call provision primarily delivered at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be based within the Orthopaedic Service, delivering consultant-level elective hip and trauma care across designated Trust sites. They will join an established multidisciplinary team and support the delivery of high-quality patient care.

This is a 12-month fixed-term consultant post established to support elective recovery, reduce waiting list pressures, and increase capacity within the hip arthroplasty service. The post holder will manage the full range of hip conditions, including primary and revision hip arthroplasty, and contribute to the ongoing development of the service.

Duties will include consultant-led outpatient clinics, elective operating lists, multidisciplinary team working, service improvement initiatives, and elective recovery programmes.

The post holder will participate in the Trauma and Orthopaedic on-call rota and contribute to the assessment and management of acute trauma patients, including trauma operating lists and trauma meetings.

Applicants should have significant experience in hip arthroplasty, including revision surgery, and be able to support both elective and trauma services. Fellowship training in hip reconstruction and revision arthroplasty is desirable.

To deliver consultant-level elective care within the hip service

To work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to support elective recovery and service development.

To take responsibility for the management of inpatients and outpatients under the care of the named consultant.

To contribute to outpatient clinics, elective theatre activity and multidisciplinary decision-making.

To provide supervision and teaching to junior medical staff, allied health professionals and medical students.

To work collaboratively with trauma and infection colleagues as required; there is no formal on-call commitment.

To participate in clinical governance activities including audit, quality improvement and appraisal.

Person Specification

Audit/ Quality Improvement Essential

Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit. Participation in a quality improvement programme Experience of quality improvement work and audit

Desirable

Undergone training in teaching and willingness to organise relevant audit activities including quality improvement evidence Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement. Published Audit including quality improvement.

Research Essential

Understanding and interest in research Ability to appraise research critically Ability to supervise juniors undertaking research projects. Evidence of recent research and development activity

Desirable

Publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals on subjects relevant to the specialty.

Full GMC Registration MB BS or Equivalent FRCS (Tr&Orth) or equivalent CCT/CESR in Trauma & Orthopaedics (or within 6 months of Interview)

Considerable clinical experience in general Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. Experience of working within the NHS. Significant experience in the assessment and management of elective hip conditions, including primary hip arthroplasty Experience in complex hip reconstruction and revision hip arthroplasty. Experience in the management of general orthopaedic trauma. Experience in the management of hip trauma, including neck of femur fractures, peri-prosthetic fractures, and complex acetabular or pelvic-related trauma. Evidence of working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality orthopaedic care. Experience of service development, clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement within a Trauma Orthopaedic service.

Desirable

Fellowship training in Hip Arthroplasty and Revision Surgery. Experience managing complex revision hip cases and peri-prosthetic joint infection. Experience contributing to regional or tertiary referral services for complex hip reconstruction. Experience teaching and supervising junior medical staff and allied healthcare professionals.
