Job summary

We are looking for a caring, motivated and enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly and supportive team at Bishops Waltham Surgery.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a well-established GP practice where patient care is at the heart of everything we do. As a Healthcare Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our clinical team and delivering high-quality care to our patients. Duties include phlebotomy, blood pressure monitoring, NHS health checks, ECGs, wound care and dressings, vaccinations (where appropriately trained), and supporting patients with long-term conditions.

Main duties of the job

As a Healthcare Assistant, you will support the clinical team in delivering high-quality patient care across a range of services within the practice. Duties will include phlebotomy, NHS health checks, blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, wound care and dressings, new patient health assessments, and supporting patients with long-term conditions.

You will work closely with GPs, nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive safe, effective and compassionate care. The role also involves maintaining accurate clinical records, managing clinical stock and equipment, and supporting infection prevention and control procedures.

Job SummaryThe Healthcare Assistant will work as part of the practice team to support the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care. The post holder will undertake a range of clinical and administrative duties, working under the supervision of the nursing team and in accordance with practice policies and procedures.

The Healthcare Assistant will assist in the provision of care to patients, promote health and wellbeing, and support the efficient running of clinical services within the practice.

Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical DutiesUndertake venepuncture (phlebotomy).

Record blood pressure measurements.

Perform NHS Health Checks.

Carry out new patient health assessments.

Record height, weight, BMI and lifestyle information.

Perform ECGs.

Undertake wound care and dressings within competency and practice protocols.

Administer vaccinations where appropriately trained and authorised.

Support the management of patients with long-term conditions.

Conduct urine testing and other point-of-care testing as required.

Chaperone patients during examinations and procedures.

Prepare and maintain clinical rooms and equipment.

Communicate effectively with patients, carers and colleagues.

Assist with stock monitoring and ordering of clinical supplies.

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Essential: Experience working in a healthcare environment. Experience of direct patient care. Experience maintaining accurate patient records. Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

Desirable: Previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant in Primary Care/General Practice. Experience of phlebotomy. Experience undertaking NHS Health Checks. Experience performing ECGs. Experience in wound care and dressings. Experience supporting patients with long-term conditions. Experience using EMIS Web clinical system.

Qualifications Essential

Qualifications and Training Essential * GCSE Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics. * Healthcare Assistant qualification or equivalent experience in a healthcare setting. * Evidence of ongoing professional development.
