Job SummaryThe Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in one of the SI facilities serviced by the Office of Facilities Management (FM), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The Office of Facilities Management is responsible for all Smithsonian facilities, many of which are designated as historic and all of which are visited by millions of people each year.

Major DutiesThe Building Services Worker performs various duties in the zone to support overall facility operations; work includes performing heavy manual tasks and maintaining facility cleanliness. In this position, you will: Perform various building cleaning tasks using appropriate cleaning methods, chemical handling procedures, and proper equipment operation and maintenance. Clean offices, exhibit space, restrooms, corridors, storage rooms, stairways, or any area within the confines of the buildings(s) using brooms, mops, buckets, heavy-duty vacuums, buffers, and scrubbers. Clean glass and plexiglass surfaces as directed; maintain stock of cleaning materials and equipment required to complete assignments and notifies their supervisor or leader when supply replenishment or cleaning equipment requires repair and replacement. Assist with labor tasks as required, including moving, arranging, and lifting heavy objects, including building materials, furniture, and collections.RequirementsConditions of Employment The incumbent may be required to work late shifts, weekends, and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations. Physical Requirements: This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.
