Get to Know the Role
You will manage the Android engineering surface for Grab's Interactive Communications products — real-time chat, VoIP calling, and number masking. You'll work across the full mobile lifecycle: architecture decisions, feature delivery, SDK integrations, and production stability. You will report to the Engineering Manager
This is a senior IC role where you'll be expected to lead system design for Android, mentor mid-level engineers, and partner closely with product, design, QA, and backend teams to ship high-quality features that connect millions of passengers, drivers, and merchants daily. This role will be onsite in HCMC
The Critical Tasks You Will Perform
Design Android applications using Kotlin and Java, following best practices and architectural patternsImplement user interfaces following Material Design principles and ensure user experience across several devices and screen sizesIntegrate RESTful APIs and backend services, ensuring efficient data communication and synchronizationWrite clean, maintainable, and well-documented code with comprehensive unit and integration tests using frameworks such as JUnit, Espresso, and MockitoOptimize application performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement solutions to enhance speed and efficiencyConduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to team members, encouraging a culture of continuous improvementTroubleshoot and debug complex issues, using analytical skills to identify causes and implement solutionsCollaborate with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to translate requirements into technical specificationsStay current with Android ecosystem developments, new technologies, and industry best practicesParticipate in Agile ceremonies and contribute to sprint planning, estimation, and retrospectivesMentor junior developers and support their professional growth through guidance and knowledge sharing What Essential Skills You Will Need
5+ years of professional Android development experience with experience with shipping production applicationsAdvanced proficiency in Kotlin and Java programming languagesExperience with Android SDK, lifecycle management, and modern architecture components (MVVM, MVP, Clean Architecture)Solid experience with RESTful API integration and backend service usageProficiency with version control systems, GitDemonstrated expertise in implementing responsive UI/UX designs and Material Design principlesExperience with testing frameworks and a commitment to writing testable, maintainable codeExperience approaching a problem from different angles, analyzing pros and cons of different solutions wExperience reviewing code to find and address potential issues and defectsExperience working in Agile/Scrum environmentsExperience communicating updates and resolutions to customers and other partners with the ability to collaborate across teamExperience with Jetpack libraries and modern Android development frameworksKnowledge of CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practicesFamiliarity with third-party libraries and dependency management toolsUnderstanding of mobile security best practices and secure coding principlesContributions to open-source Android projects
