About this role

Engage in the development of complex embedded software systems for safety‑critical defence and maritime applications with ALTEN Ltd. Join our team as an Embedded Software Engineer, where you’ll work on the design, development and integration of high‑integrity software using modern C++ and embedded technologies. You’ll collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver robust, production‑ready code that underpins mission‑critical systems, contributing across the full software development lifecycle within a regulated environment.

Location: Manchester (Stockport)

On‑site: Hybrid, up to 4 days per week on site

Seniority: Mid to Senior level roles available

Security Clearance: Candidates must be willing and eligible to obtain SC clearance.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop and maintain embedded software for safety‑critical systemsProduce high‑quality, efficient and maintainable code primarily using C++, with exposure to C, Java and PythonWork with hardware abstraction layers and low‑level software componentsApply high‑integrity coding standards such as MISRA, JSF++, HIC++ and AUTOSARPerform code refactoring, unit testing and static analysis to ensure software qualityContribute to model‑driven development using UMLCollaborate within Agile development environments, using modern ticketing and version‑control toolsSupport integration, verification and validation activities across the software lifecycle Required Skills

Strong experience in embedded software developmentAdvanced proficiency in C/C++ within safety‑critical or regulated environmentsExperience with unit testing and static analysisKnowledge of Linux OS programming and build toolingUnderstanding of real‑time systems and real‑time signal processingFamiliarity with TCP/IP networking protocols and system architecturesExperience working with Agile SDLC methodologiesSoft Skills & Collaboration

Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary engineering teamStrong problem‑solving and analytical skillsComfortable working with complex requirements and system constraintsProactive mindset with a focus on quality and continuous improvementRequired Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, or related discipline, or relevant technical military background with equivalent experience.Desirable Skills

Experience with Java and Python in engineering applicationsExposure to containerisation and virtualisation technologiesExperience with CI/CD and build automation tools such as Jenkins or BambooFamiliarity with GitLab, JIRA, or similar ticketing/version‑control systemsBackground in defence, aerospace, or other safety‑critical industries Why join us?
