Job summary

The Specialty Doctor in General Adult Psychiatry within the Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team (CRHTT) plays a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred mental health care to individuals experiencing acute psychiatric crises. Based at Antelope House in Southampton, the post holder works as part of a multidisciplinary team providing a 24/7 service aimed at supporting patients in the community and preventing unnecessary hospital admissions.

The role involves conducting urgent and routine mental health assessments, reviewing patients' mental state, managing medication, and developing care plans using a biopsychosocial approach. The post holder contributes to clinical decision-making regarding admission or home treatment, ensuring that care is safe, evidence-based, and recovery-focused. They are responsible for managing complex risk, engaging with carers and partner services, and supporting the team to deliver effective, coordinated interventions.

The Specialty Doctor provides clinical leadership within the team, offering supervision, guidance, and education to colleagues, while maintaining strong collaborative relationships with community mental health teams, GPs, substance misuse services, and other stakeholders. The role also includes participation in clinical governance, quality improvement, and service development activities to enhance patient outcomes and experience.

Main duties of the job

*To undertake timely administrative duties associated with the care of patients.

*To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively

*To participate, where appropriate, in service and business planning activity for the service

*To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) (and Approved Clinician (AC) approval if held), and to abide by professional codes of conduct.

*To participate annually in a job plan review with the clinical manager, which will include consultation with a relevant manager in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation.

*To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as appropriate, and agreed with consultant colleagues and the Medical Director and in accordance with the Trust's personnel policies and procedures. This may include assessing competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework.

*To support junior medical staff working with the post-holder operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are compliant with the Working Time Directive

*To comply with the Trust's agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and where appropriate to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services.
