Job summary

We are seeking a dynamic, motivated and highly skilled Band 7 Endoscopy Nurse/Sister to join our expanding Endoscopy Service at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced endoscopy professional to provide strong clinical leadership, support service development and ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred care within a busy, innovative and JAG-accredited unit.

The unit comprises of 5 Endoscopy procedure rooms on the St. Thomas's site with facilities for Telephone Pre-Assessment clinics, Admission, Recovery and Discharge. 1 Satellite Endoscopy procedure room on the Guy's site with is based within the Tower theatres. We run fledged decontamination units on both sites.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside an established Band 7 Manager, to lead and coordinate daily clinical activity within the endoscopy unit, ensuring effective staffing, excellent standards of care, and seamless patient pathways. You will act as a specialist resource to the multidisciplinary team, support quality improvement initiatives, manage operational challenges, and contribute to workforce, budget and service planning. This role requires expert knowledge in endoscopy practice and a commitment to supporting a high-performing, collaborative team.

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Managerial

Provide visible and proactive clinical leadership, acting as a role model for the endoscopy nursing team.

Lead the safe and effective coordination of daily clinical activity, ensuring appropriate staffing, skill mix, and patient flow.

Support the planning and delivery of service improvements, pathway redesign and accreditation requirements.

Manage complex clinical and operational issues, using advanced decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Quality & Patient Safety

Uphold the highest standards of endoscopy practice, ensuring compliance with national guidelines, infection control standards and JAG requirements.

Lead on quality initiatives, safety huddles, risk assessments and incident management.

Promote a culture of continuous improvement, patient safety and compassionate care.

Staff Management, Education and Training

Support recruitment, induction, performance reviews, sickness management and workforce planning.

Provide mentorship, supervision and clinical teaching to ensure ongoing staff competency and professional development.

Facilitate a positive and inclusive working environment that encourages learning and reflective practice.

Finance and Budget Management

Support effective financial planning, including staffing and establishment review, procurement and equipment maintenance.

Contribute to budget monitoring, cost-effective service delivery and resource optimisation.

Ensure appropriate use of consumables and adherence to procurement policies.

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research

Lead and participate in audit, service evaluations and clinical research initiatives to support evidence-based practice.

Contribute to clinical governance meetings, policy development and implementation.

Assist in preparing the unit for accreditation reviews and regulatory inspections.

General Responsibilities

Maintain excellent communication with patients, families and staff, ensuring dignity, respect and informed decision-making.

Contribute to Trust-wide initiatives, uphold organisational values and support the development of an exemplary patient experience.

Represent the endoscopy service in meetings, MDT forums and collaborative projects.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

NMC Level one Registration Mentorship course / SSSAP Evidence of ongoing professional development , supplemented by managerial training and CPD To hold the appropriate level for experience working within an Endoscopy unit

Desirable

Leadership Development / Working towards MSc in Nursing / Working towards

Experience Essential

Significant post-registration experience within an endoscopy or gastroenterology setting. Management/ in-charge experience - deputising for band 7 Experience in undertaking appraisals and supporting staff in Personal development planning Awareness of Clinical Governance and Risk management Teamwork/Multidisciplinary working

Desirable

Experience of participating in JAG audits or accreditation renewal Experience in sickness management or other Human Resource processes Audit and research experience Change management

Knowledge and Skills Essential

Strong knowledge of endoscopy clinical procedures, safety protocols, decontamination processes, and national guidelines. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of JAG (Joint Advisory Group) accreditation standards. Competent in use of electronic patient systems (EPIC) and Health roster Strong decision-making skills under pressure in a fast-paced, procedure-driven environment Working with Multi Disciplinary Team Time management and organisational skills Communication skills

Desirable

Experience in service improvement or Quality improvement projects / initiatives Demonstrates advanced clinical skills, managing complex sedation, supporting therapeutic endoscopy/ recovery area.
