Due to team expansion, we are delighted to be recruiting for 1.0WTE enthusiastic and driven Band 8a Lead Pharmacist for General Medicine.
Our Pharmacy department has a strong clinical presence in all areas. We have an establishment of over 100 members and enjoy an excellent reputation within the Trust where we provide patient-centred Clinical Pharmacy Services to inpatients and outpatients (in the form of Pharmacist-led Clinics) at Barnsley Hospital.
Our highly respected and well embedded Clinical Pharmacy Service with ward-based Clinical Pharmacists, Medicines Management Technicians and Medicines Management Support Workers will ensure that you have maximal patient contact with a minimal supply role.
As Lead Pharmacist for General Medicine, you will be responsible for leading on the provision of a high quality, cost effective and efficient patient centred Clinical Pharmacy Service to General Medical Wards at Barnsley Hospital.
We are an innovative and forward-thinking department who have over recent years invested in a host of technical improvements. The department is friendly, forward thinking and constantly expanding. This is an exciting time to be joining the team as electronic prescribing and medicines administration EPMA is fully embedded and we are using Quality Improvement QI methodology to reprofile and optimise all aspects of the pharmacy service, and we welcome and routinely implement ideas around doing things differently.
Main duties of the job
You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to advise on all aspects of drug management and promote clinical and cost-effective prescribing through evidence based guidelines and policies. This role offers opportunities to develop advanced clinical skills, leadership capabilities, line management skills and operational expertise.
You will hold a Post-Graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (or equivalent). Opportunities to study for a post-graduate prescribing qualification will be available if not already held, as the department looks to further expand and enhance clinical services.
Alongside all of our other Pharmacists you will help provide our remote On-Call Service as well as working late nights, weekends and bank holidays on a rota basis.
You should be an excellent communicator with the ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team. Significant recent post-registration hospital experience is essential and we welcome applications from existing Band 8a Pharmacists or from experienced Band 7 Pharmacists looking for their first Band 8a role.

Knowledge and Awareness Essential
Extensive knowledge and experience of working within hospital pharmacy. Knowledge of Medicines & Pharmacy Legislation, professional ethics, Health and Safety and the wider Health Service. Knowledge of Clinical Governance, Medicines Management, Risk Management, NICE guidances, National Service Frameworks, Shared Care Guidelines and the modernisation agenda relevant to the post. Knowledge of theoretical and practical issues, including professional guidelines, related to use of medicines and practice of pharmacy in the specialist areas. Understanding and practical experience of audit.
Desirable
Computer literate.
Qualifications Essential
Vocational Masters degree in pharmacy. Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Postgraduate qualification in pharmacy to Diploma level, relevant to post.

Skills and Abilities Essential
Negotiating and influencing skills. Practical application of Clinical Governance, Medicines Management, Clinical Risk Management and Health & Safety. Able to dispense accurately and to undertake clinical and accuracy checking of work undertaken by others. Able to communicate effectively with patients, medical, nursing and other staff as well as with primary care practitioners, pharmaceutical companies and other agencies, verbally and in writing. Able to communicate complex or contentious information to individuals or groups and deal with challenges. Able to prepare effective policy, procedure and guideline documents. Able to communicate complex and specialist information appropriately. Able to negotiate solutions to problems. Able to deliver specialist training to groups of staff, including pharmacy, medical and nursing staff. Ability to identify and report clinical risks in relation to the prescribing and administration of medicines and to promote safe practice. Ability to analyse drug usage and expenditure data and identify relevant issues for action by the speciality or directorate. Can use initiative appropriately. Ability to plan, prioritise and reorganise daily, weekly and monthly workload in the face of changing and completing demands on time.
Experience Essential
Extensive post-qualification experience of hospital pharmacy service delivery, either from employment within the hospital service. Continuing Professional Development to the mandatory requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council. Training and experience including dispensary services, clinical pharmacy and medicines information.
