Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Base site: Bedford Hospital)

This is a well-established substantive post within an experienced breast surgery team at Bedford Hospital, comprising one Consultant, one Associate Specialist, and one Specialty Doctor. The vacancy has arisen following the retirement of the current post-holder.

The successful appointee will be based primarily at the Bedford site; however, the Breast Unit operates as one part of a single merged service across Bedford and Luton. As the service continues to evolve, there is an increasing expectation that medical staff will integrate their practice across both sites and work flexibly to meet service needs.

Main duties of the job

Undertake regular new patient and follow up clinics at Bedford Hospital

Provide surgical treatment to patients with malignant and benign breast disease.

Prepare for and contribute to the weekly Breast Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Meetings

Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of breast patients.

Work closely with Breast multi-disciplinary team to manage the Breast patients in their pathway.

Teach and train intermediate grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.

Contribute to the future development of the joint working strategy of the Unit across the Bedfordshire Hospitals Trust

Actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

Have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD).

Have skills in breast ultrasound, or be prepared to undergo training in this regard

The appointee will have Full UK Medical/Dental registration at time of application.

It is essential for the applicants to have obtained the MRCS or equivalent qualification, and be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within 6 months of attaining CCT at the time of the interview.

Personal Circumstances Essential

Qualifications Essential

Medical Degree Relevant Postgraduate qualification or equivalent

Desirable

MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research

Registration Essential

Full GMC registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences) Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview) or CESR - portfolio pathway (must be on the Specialist Register at time of applying)

Clinical Experience Essential

Excellent all round experience of DGH work Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience of in Breast Surgery including formal training in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision

Desirable

Evidence of subspecialty training or fellowship out of region.

Clinical Effectiveness Essential

Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD Experience of guideline appraisal Participation in relevant local audits Ability to interpret and apply clinical research

Participation in relevant national audits Training/experience in breast ultrasound
