Job summary

We warmly welcome you to our busy and dynamic team, which delivers a comprehensive and specialised Ophthalmology service to a population of over 750,000. Our team boasts of highly experienced specialists in Medical Retina, Cornea, Paediatrics, Neuro-Ophthalmology , Glaucoma and Oculoplastics. We have a close working relationship with other specialties within the Trust that further support the service. We are supported by efficient, innovative and well led Nursing, Orthoptic and Optometrist teams.

We are excited to recruit a full time Medical Retina Specialist Doctor to provide excellent care to our patients. The post is fixed term for 12 months and it is anticipated that a substantive appointment will follow.

We expect the right candidate to be a role model and be to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team through effective communication and influencing skills.

As well as being a highly skilled and experienced Medical Retina doctor, who will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and under the care of consultant ophthalmologists within the medical retina service, the successful candidate will have a broad experience in the management of ophthalmology outpatients and will engage in all aspects of ophthalmology patient pathways, including in programmed Eye Casualty sessions.

Main duties of the job

To provide high-quality clinical care to our patients and ensure that the departmental vision is maintained in line with National and Local policy. We expect the right candidate to be a role model and be to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team through effective communication and influencing skills. This role requires a highly skilled and experienced Medical Retina doctor, who will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and under the care of consultant ophthalmologists within the medical retina service. To work with the Medical Retina consultants to look at innovative ways to improve the service we provide for our patients.

We run a Women's Health Hubin Ilford; an Ageing Well Centrein Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospitaland at St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The majority of our 8,400 staff - who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexiblyand more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We're proud to be a London Living Wageemployer.

Person Specification

Essential & Desirable Essential

MBBS / MRCS / FRCS or equivalent medical qualification. Meet the criteria set out in the Specialist Grade Generic Capabilities Framework. In depth knowledge and experience in managing Medical Retina and Emergency patients. Good leadership and organisational, communication, professional and personal skills

Desirable

Higher Degree (MD/PhD) Experience of and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff Experience of audit and management
