About this role

Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, adaptable and self-motivated individual to join our post-kidney transplant nurse specialist team. The post-transplant team provide a busy and dynamic service to patients following a kidney transplant.

The successful candidate will join our nurse led post-transplant follow-up service based within the Renal Unit at Nottingham City Hospital, part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH).

This role will require you to be an autonomous practitioner working in a team providing lifelong follow-up care to kidney transplant patients but also be part of a large multidisciplinary team managing the complex needs of adult kidney transplant patients.

Previous experience in renal nursing is essential and the successful candidate would be required to complete the Non-Medical Prescribing qualification, if not already previously achieved.

The post is part-time, working 24 hours over 3 working days. However, flexibility in working hours will occasionally be required. The post also requires participation in the transplant co-ordinator on-call rota which includes overnight or weekends (predominantly telephone based).

Main duties of the job

The main responsibilities are:

To take overall responsibility for the care of a caseload of patients requiring renal transplant care.

To provide specialist training across functional boundaries, as required for both patients and renal nursing staff.

To monitor and adjust immunosuppression dosages in transplant recipients.

To participate in the on-call rota for transplant co-ordination.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications Essential

First level registered nurse with current registration with NMC First level degree in nursing or relevant health related subject Relevant post-basic study relevant to specialty Non-medical prescribing qualification or working towards/willing to work towards gaining this qualification

Desirable

Continuing professional development/reflective profile Completion of all local competency packages Research training/experience Have a suitable teaching and assessing qualification

Experience Essential

Minimum of 5 years post-registration experience to include 3 years of renal experience Supervision of non-registered staff, pre-registration and post-basic students Ability to manage the clinical area or ward efficiently and effectively Ability to lead change and lead new ways of working

Desirable

Audit or research within the clinical area Experience of working as a clinical nurse specialist Formal teaching of groups of staff

Communication & Relationship Skills Essential

Able to present and receive complex information within the multi-professional team Demonstrate self-awareness and understanding of personal accountability Ability to support colleagues, patients and relatives/carers in distressing circumstances
