Job summary

Interest and applications are sought from senior nurses with a professional, motivated approach and experience of leading a large team. Experience in Endoscopy is desirable but not essential to the role, however a genuine commitment and drive for endoscopy service development is. Experience of leading a team in a theatre, day case, ambulatory or procedural setting would also be beneficial.

Main duties of the job

The Matron will be accountable for the clinical operation and quality of the service, working with the close engagement of our supportive consultant body, and the Gastroenterology Care Group Triumvirate Team. Ensuring compliance and commitment to the JAG accreditation process and providing clinical leadership to ensure high quality endoscopy practice and nursing care are key to this exciting role .

The Matron will also hold budgetary responsibility of the area as part of ensuring efficiency and productivity of the Endoscopy department.

The role includes the requirement to work on the clinical manager on call rota, which enables the opportunity to develop as a senior nurse within the wider hospital as well as being part of the wider senior medicine nursing team in Medicine.

Job description Job responsibilities

Support the senior leadership team by ensuring that optimum quality of care and clinical excellence is achieved and maintained by working collaboratively and co-operatively with clinical teams, patients, patient representatives, relatives and carers.

Provide strong clinical leadership on the quality of care provided, and cleanliness of the environment.

Role model a quality driven, and caring and compassionate leadership style, upholding the standards and values of the nursing profession at all times.

Ensure that operational plans and performance are closely managed, by proactively leading and providing solutions to resolve difficult operational issues.

Deal competently with difficult issues ensuring that policy is implemented and performance managed on behalf of the senior leadership team.

Implement patient centred clinical and nursing operational strategy and plans, ensuring that systems and processes are in place to comply with relevant legislation and governance requirements, including linking with external bodies when required, utilising the expertise and skills of the wider Divisional team.

Contribute to strategic direction and policy setting for the Division, forming an essential two way communications link between the Care Group and staff in departments ensuring that key messages, team brief etc. are shared and discussed, demonstrating a coaching style of leadership, ensuring that clinical, staff and stakeholder engagement is in place, and action taken to address issues.

Qualifications Essential

Clinical Professional Qualification. Degree level or equivalent Post-graduate/registration Management or Training qualification /equivalent

Experience Essential

Demonstrable experience as a clinical manager, with responsibility for clinical quality, people management, budget responsibility and successful delivery of performance targets and quality standards within strict financial controls.

Knowledge Essential

Understanding and appreciation of diversity Key issues and pace of change facing the NHS nationally and locally, assess and describe impact on nursing/clinical professional service.

Desirable

Principles and impact of the NHS Constitution Knowledge and understanding of computerised financial, management, budgetary management and workforce information systems Knowledge and understanding of governance arrangements and standards in the NHS and the wider health and social care economy

Skills Essential

Coaching & values led leadership style, encouraging engagement and empowerment amongst staff and stakeholders, and in developing high performing teams A high level of communication skills, to include but not exclusively, mediation, negotiation, consultation, facilitation, presentation, training and coaching skills using well developed interpersonal skills to influence, inform, reconcile differences and resolve conflicts. Desirable

Research information and use audit skills to applying findings to influence practice and develop business cases/plans. IT literate and able to use standard office software and bespoke systems. Imaginative and innovative in developing new ways of working in meeting patient care and service needs
