Main duties of the job Join the team at Thornford Park Hospital in Thatcham, Berkshire as a Healthcare Assistant in a secure Mental Health setting. The role requires empathy, patience, resilience, and strong communication skills to support and empower service users through recovery and rehabilitation pathways. Experience in Mental Health is beneficial as Thornford Park provides medium and low secure forensic services, PICU care, and specialist pathways for Mental Health illness, Personality Disorders, Learning Disabilities, and Autism. You'll work closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic, person-centred care. Opportunities to work across multiple wards, pursue qualifications in health and social care, and undergo a comprehensive three-week induction are offered. Shifts are 12.5 hours a day, 2 shifts a week, including nights and weekends. Thornford Park is easily accessible via Thatcham train station, with shuttle transport available.
What You Will Be Doing:
As a Healthcare Assistant, you’ll play a vital role in supporting and empowering service users through a seamless, integrated recovery and rehabilitation pathway that truly transforms lives. Your day-to-day will include:
Providing compassionate, person-centred care to individuals at every stage of their recovery Supporting ward rounds and observing behaviours to help shape responsive care plans Assisting with everyday tasks, including personal care, to promote dignity and independence Collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic, tailored support Where You’ll Be Working:

Thornford Park is a 141 bed hospital set within 21 acres of Berkshire countryside, offering a seamless care pathway across medium and low secure services, psychiatric intensive care units (PICUs), and rehabilitation flats. The site supports men and women with complex Mental Health needs, Personality Disorders, Learning Disabilities, and Autism—often with histories of offending or previous placement challenges.
Services include:
Medium & Low Secure Units for acute and long-term care PICUs for individuals in psychiatric crisis Older Adult Services with age-appropriate, holistic interventions Specialist Learning Disability & Autism Pathways with integrated secure settings and step-down flats You’ll be part of a recovery-focused, multidisciplinary team helping people move safely toward greater independence.
