Job summary

Athena Medical Centre is seeking a motivated and patient centred Salaried GP to join our friendly and supportive team on a fixed-term basis to provide maternity cover. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a well-established East London practice with a collaborative clinical culture and strong multidisciplinary support.

The post is for 5 sessions per week on a 9-month fixed-term contract. The working pattern is expected to include Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with some discussion around session structure for the right candidate. We are looking for a GP who values continuity of care, teamwork, and delivering high quality patient care within a sustainable and supportive practice environment.

We welcome applications from experienced GPs as well as newly qualified GPs who are enthusiastic about working in a diverse and rewarding primary care setting.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will undertake a range of routine general practice duties including face-to-face and telephone consultations, clinical administration, prescription management, and the review of pathology and radiology results associated with patient care.

The GP will work as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team including pharmacists, nursing staff, healthcare assistants, and administrative colleagues. Participation in clinical meetings and practice development activities will be encouraged.

We aim to provide safe, high-quality and patient-focused care whilst supporting sustainable workloads and maintaining good continuity for out patient population.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Salaried General Practitioner (Fixed-Term)

Reports to: The Partners (Clinically)

The Practice Manager (Administratively)

Sessions: 5 sessions per week

Job Summary:

The post-holder will manage a caseload and deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standards of care for all registered and temporary patients.

Clinical Responsibilities:

In accordance with the practice timetable, as agreed, the post-holder will make him/herself available to undertake a variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness In consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health Providing counselling and health education Admitting or discharging patients to and from the caseload and referring them to other care providers as appropriate Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards Collecting data for audit purposes Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible) Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate In general the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.Other Responsibilities within the Organisation:

Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety A commitment to life-long learning and audit to ensure evidence-based best practice Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation Contributing to the development of computer-based patient records Contributing to the summarising of patient records and Read-Coding patient data Attending training and events organised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Qualifications & Professional Standing: Fully qualified GP with a primary medical qualification (MBChB, MBBS, or equivalent). On the GMC GP Register with a current, unrestricted license to practice. Currently included on the NHS England National Medical Performers List. Evidence of current, up-to-date CPR and safeguarding training (Level 3 for Children and Adults). Full, appropriate medical indemnity insurance cover (MDU, MPS, or equivalent). Clinical Skills & Experience: Proven experience working as a GP within NHS primary care. Ability to manage a diverse clinical caseload autonomously, making safe, evidence-based clinical decisions under standard time pressures. Strong competence in standard primary care software systems (e.g., EMIS Web, SystmOne) and digital triage tools (e.g., Accurx). Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build rapid, trusting relationships with patients from diverse backgrounds. Adaptability & Teamwork: Ability to integrate quickly and smoothly into an existing practice team and adapt to established local clinical protocols. Commitment to maintaining clear, accurate, and contemporaneous clinical notes to ensure seamless continuity of care during the cover period.

Desirable

Local Knowledge & Enhanced Skills: Familiarity with local referral pathways, community services, and prescribing formularies within the local Integrated Care System (ICS). Experience or specific training in specialised areas that add immediate value (e.g., minor surgery, joint injections, or LARC fitting). Workflow Efficiency: Experience managing digital workflows efficiently, including processing pathology results, clinical correspondence, and repeat prescriptions. Experience utilising electronic consultation templates to ensure high-quality QOF (Quality and Outcomes Framework) and IIF data capture.
