Job summary What is clinical coding?

Clinical coders translate information from patient recordssuch as diagnoses, treatments and proceduresinto nationally recognised codes. These codes are essential: they support patient safety, clinical research, service improvement and ensure the Trust is accurately funded for the care it provides.

As a Clinical Coding Specialist, you will focus on more complex and specialist patient cases, working closely with clinicians, auditors and fellow coders to ensure data is accurate, consistent and high quality. Youll become a local expert, supporting colleagues with queries, mentoring newer coders and helping to improve standards across the service.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is looking for a Clinical Coding Specialist to join our experienced and supportive Clinical Coding team. This role is ideal for people who may not yet fully know the profession but are interested in developing specialist expertise in a vital behindthescenes NHS role.

Analyse detailed clinical records and apply national coding rules Work with clinicians to clarify and resolve complex cases Lead and contribute to audits and quality improvement projects Share knowledge and help develop good practice within your team This post is offered under Annex 21, which means its designed as a training and development opportunity. If youre not yet fully qualified, well support you to achieve the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ), with structured milestones and increasing pay as you progress. Pay and progression

Under Annex 21, you’ll start at a percentage of the Band 5 salary, increasing as you meet training milestones:
