Band 7 Senior Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse

18.75 Hours per Week / Permanent

Our paediatric diabetes service is continuing to grow and evolve, supported by a highly motivated multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering outstanding, child-centred care.

As a Senior Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse, you will play a pivotal role within our specialist MDT, helping to drive service innovation, improve patient outcomes, and support children, young people, and their families throughout their diabetes journey. We are looking for someone who is proactive, compassionate, and excited by the opportunity to help shape and develop accessible, high-quality services.

Main duties of the job

To take the leading role in the advanced assessment, treatment, and management of children with diabetes within inpatients and outpatients. To lead for diabetes transition services. To act as a clinical lead for the Paediatric diabetes services. To review and educate all children and young people. To develop comprehensive care plans for CYP. To be highly skilled in the advanced clinical assessment and advanced management of CYP with diabetes. To provide advanced information, education, advice, and support to the CYP, parents, ward staff and schools. Working in a demanding environment, the successful applicant will be required to: Lead on a designated clinic and independently manage a case load of CYPs. Use excellent communication skills. Have advanced and extensive knowledge and clinical skills to manage CYP with diabetes, aetiology, and treatment. Have experience of working autonomously and as a member of the nursing team/MDT Be confident and competent in their role and have a willingness to develop their skills. Have excellent organisational, prioritisation and problem-solving skills. Have the experience and expertise of supporting and teaching ward staff, families, and other professionals such as schools. Demonstrate resilience with a fast paced and unpredictable workload. Lead in quality improvement projects involving audits.Manage junior staff. Hold strong leadership and management skills.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Registered Child branch or Registered Sick Children's Nurse (RSCN). Recognised Post graduate Paediatric Diabetes Qualification Independent Non-Medical Prescribing qualification (Active on the NMC register) or willingness to undertake. Teaching qualification or equivalent, willingness to undertake, or equivalent experience.

Desirable

Educated to MSc Degree level in Paediatric diabetes Leadership development programme or willingness to undertake leadership training. Advanced Communication Skills Training. Completed / completing a Master's pathway.

Experience Essential

Significant demonstrable experience within paediatric diabetes care with evidence of professional development within this specialism. Previous experience of formal / informal teaching of CYP's & staff. Experience in managing paediatric diabetes CYP's in the hospital and community settings. Evidence of developing policy, guidelines and managing resources. Previous practice development experience.

Desirable

Previous experience in audit and evaluation. Experience in acting as a clinical supervisor and mentor to others Extensive diabetes experience. Previous experience of providing support via an on-call service during evenings and weekends.

Skills Essential

Direct care skills in hospital and community settings (i.e. Insulin dose adjustment, able to lead on pump starts and CGM starts, history taking, assessment, treatment and evaluation in relation to diabetes). Advanced clinical assessment skills and ability to make autonomous clinical decisions and judgments. Coaching and mentoring skills IT literate-keyboard and word processing skills. Completed band 7 PDSN competencies. Excellent communication skills

Desirable

Understanding of health policy and the national and local nursing agenda. Database management. Clinical audit. Application of management/leadership skills and autonomous practice.

Special Requirements Essential

Ability to travel across different sites and within the community setting in a timely and efficient way.
