About this role

Job summary

Mental Health Support Teams in Schools (known locally as Wellbeing & Emotional Support Teams WEST) are expanding across Herefordshire and Worcestershire. WEST works with schools to deliver early interventions for children and young people aged 5-18 experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties, using evidence-based, low-intensity CBT approaches alongside whole-school support.

We are a supportive and collaborative service that values learning, reflection and supervision. Staff benefit from development opportunities, training and a strong team culture. The service operates Monday to Friday, 9am5pm.

We are expanding our schools in Redditch and Bromsgrove, and we are now recruiting four Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioners. Posts are fixed term for two years at Band 4, with EMHP training commencing mid-September. On qualification and registration, posts become permanent at Band 5. A full UK driving licence and access to a car are essential.

Please note the Trust will not routinely provide sponsorship to work for this role. Employment on a time limited visa doesn't guarantee sponsorship at point of expiry.

Main duties of the job

Be educationally supervised, assess & deliver outcome focused, evidence-based interventions in educational settings for CYP.

Developing skills in supporting CYP with mild to moderate MH difficulties, parents/carers, & educators in the self-management of presenting difficulties.

Where appropriate parents/carers to collaborate & coproduce their own agreed plan of care.

Undertake accurate assessments of risk to self & others.

Engage & learn from aligned education setting/MH Links.

Engage in robust managerial & clinical supervision & agree CYP cases.

Practice, evidence, reflect on & demonstrate an ability to manage ones own caseload.

Attend multi-professional meetings.

Keep coherent records of all training & clinical activity in line with both health and education service protocols and use these records & outcome data to inform decision making, provide data collection.

Evidence of working within a collaborative approach, with teachers, parents, CYP, wider community.

Development of clinical/training materials.

Supporting & facilitating staff in education settings to identify & where appropriate manage issues related to MH & wellbeing.

Working with and within education environments to afford better access to specialist MH services.

To evidence development of those skills with associated knowledge acquisition to record and evidence progression towards an academic award and demonstrable practical ability.

Person Specification

Knowledge Essential

Knowledge of the educational system in England. Knowledge of children and young people gained through academic study in child development, child wellbeing or mental health. Knowledge of Mental Health Support Teams in schools Programme locally and nationally.

Skills and Abilities Essential

Ability to learn in a variety of settings and using a variety of learning methods. Computer literate. Ability to study as a self-motivated learner who can formulate their own progress towards learning objectives and negotiate pathways to achievement with supervisory teams.

Qualifications Essential

Ability to study at degree level. Proven record of previous academic attainment. Good solid basic literacy and numeracy qualifications at a minimum of level 2. I understand that I will be asked to provide original certificates to verify my qualifications at point of offer.

Desirable

Degree or Masters level qualifications.

Experience Desirable

It is desirable that the applicant will have previous experience of working with children and young people.

Additional Criteria Essential

Self-motivated. Team player. Excellent time management and organisational skills. Able to meet the physical requirements of the role after reasonable adjustments have been made for any illness or disability. Ability to personally manage a sensitive, traumatic and potentially emotionally distressing caseload. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to meet the travel requirements of the role.
