Job summary
We are looking for a reliable and patient-focused Dispenser to join our team on a part-time basis. This role is ideal for someone who is organised, approachable, and able to work efficiently in a busy environment while providing excellent service to patients and supporting the wider team.
The working hours will be:
Monday 2pm - 6pm
Tuesday 8am - 12pm
Main duties of the job
Process all relevant prescriptions and repeat prescriptions as authorised by GPs in accordance with the good practice principles of the Dispensing Services Quality Scheme; Ensure that all medicines and appliances dispensed are checked against the prescription and whenever there is doubt about the appropriateness of the item, or about the dose or labelling instructions, to check with the authorising doctor or duty doctor; Collect all due prescription charges and ensure that the patient declaration on the reverse of the FP10 is duly filled in and signed by the patient; Manage ordering stock and stock control; Answer and deal with dispensary phone enquiries; Monitor patients exemption status; Sort and dispose of unwanted/returned medication; Any other duties to assist in the smooth day to day running of the dispensary and surgery as directed by the either the dispensary manager or practice manager.

Our practice is led by 5 GP partners alongside 5 salaried GPs, supported by a large and experienced reception and administrative team. We operate from a large, modern purpose-built main surgery with two additional branch sites, offering comprehensive primary care services to our local communities.
We are a part-dispensing practice with a full nursing team and provide a range of enhanced services, including extended hours access. The practice is also actively involved in research, teaching, and training, reflecting our commitment to continuous development and excellence in patient care.

Job description Job responsibilities
To ensure the safe and accurate ordering, dispensing and checking of all medication, dressings and appliances and that they are prepared and delivered within the set timescales.
Dispense and check all prescriptions safely and accurately
Communicate effectively with patients, visitors and the multidisciplinary team
Ensure that all messages are appropriately logged and appropriate action taken
Maintain patient confidentiality, being helpful and courteous at all times
Observe and follow surgery policies, protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) at all times
Establish and maintain accurate and tidy working practices
Undertake agreed tasks once competency achieved
Adhere to Controlled Drugs protocol
Answer the telephone promptly
Assist in the smooth running of the dispensary by ensuring that the work stations are left clean and tidy and by undertaking housekeeping and cleaning duties as appropriate
Deal with prescriptions monies promptly and accurately
Replenish all stock levels at the end of the shift forms, medication etc
Comply with Information Governance and computer usage policies and guidelines
Use resources effectively
Share knowledge with colleagues
Keep up-to-date (CPD) and undertake mandatory training as stipulated
Complete additional allocated tasks following discussion and agreement with dispensary team leader
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
- Dispensing qualification (NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent)
Desirable
Experience using TPP SystmOne. Previous experience working in a dispensary, pharmacy, or GP practice environment. Knowledge of NHS prescription processes and dispensing procedures. Understanding of medicines management and stock control. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent communication and customer service skills. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Good organisational and time management skills. Understanding of confidentiality and data protection requirements. Basic IT skills and ability to use clinical systems effectively.
