Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) Haematology/Blood Transfusion

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the dynamic and evolving team within the Haematology Department at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.The department is looking for a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with IBMS Certificate of Competence, an essential requirement, and IBMS Specialist Diploma (or equivalent pre-2004). Candidates who are 50-75% through completing their Specialist Diploma are welcome to apply and would be held on Band 5 until their examination is complete when they would automatically transfer to Band 6

The Haematology Department is one of the largest in the UK offering a wide variety of analyses using modern equipment and processes over 3,000 samples each day. The department holds UKAS ISO15189:2012 accreditation and is an HCPC approved training laboratory. Training and development opportunities are available and all staff are encouraged actively to participate in CPD. The department is a tertiary referral site for Haemostasis & Thrombosis, Haemoglobinopathies and Immunophenotyping services.

Previous experience in NHS is essential. Candidates without IBMS Certificate of Competence will not be shortlisted. Please read the Person Specification carefully to ensure you are able to match.

Main duties of the job

In order to provide the most comprehensive experience, the successful applicants will participate in the laboratory rotation through the core sections of Automated Haematology and Coagulation in addition to the specialist area of Blood Transfusion; you will be expected to work at either laboratory site (University Hospital of

Wales/University Hospital Llandough) and undertake their contracted hours over a seven day period with participation in shift working following a suitable period of training within the department.

As a Specialist BMS, further opportunities will be provided to rotate into specialised laboratories.

This post is Fixed Term/Secondment for 2 years due to the needs of the service.

Qualifications Essential

Experience Essential

Experience working in NHS Haematology/BTL Laboratory Haematology/Transfusion experience (not PCR and other Path disciplines)
