Sandy Health Centre is a well-established, forward-thinking GP practice with a strong track record of delivering high-quality patient care. Our aim within the practice and across our Primary Care Network is to provide excellent care for patients, and the successful applicant will be expected to lead the practice team and support staff in achieving this aim.
We are part of Sandhills Primary Care Network, and the practices within the PCN are committed to improving patient care and services across our local area. We work closely with a wide multidisciplinary PCN team including physiotherapists, paramedics, pharmacists, a pharmacy technician, clinical pharmacist, mental health worker, and social prescriber. We also have a dedicated PCN Manager supporting the practices, with regular collaborative meetings held every Friday morning.
Our CQC rating is Good, and we have strong systems in place to consistently achieve our QOF targets. We pride ourselves on having an excellent, supportive team culture where colleagues work closely together and support one another.
We are situated in a purpose-built health centre in the centre of Sandy, Bedfordshire, with excellent rail links and ample staff parking available. The practice currently cares for just over 10,000 patients and provides dispensing services for approximately 1,800 patients.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Business Manager to help lead the organisation alongside the Partners, current Practice Manager, and our supportive dispensary and patient services team managers.
The successful candidate will play a key role in leading primary care services, ensuring the practice meets regulatory and contractual standards while remaining financially sustainable. This is a varied and rewarding role requiring strong operational, financial, strategic, and people-management skills.
Main Duties of the Role
Leading primary care services to ensure the practice meets regulatory and contractual standards whilst remaining financially viable Providing strong leadership based on sound knowledge of business management, finance, planning, and human resource management, including recruitment Meeting reporting requirements of the partnership and ensuring compliance with local and national KPIs and contracts Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety at Work legislation Managing practice income, expenditure, and accounts, including preparation of financial reports for the Partners Implementing and maintaining effective operational systems under direction from the Partners Ensuring compliance with data protection legislation and information governance requirements Supporting the preparation of practice business plans and annual reports

Job Summary
The Business Manager is responsible for the overall operational, financial, and administrative management of the GP surgery. The role ensures the practice delivers high-quality patient services while meeting NHS contractual, regulatory, and financial requirements. The Business Manager leads non-clinical staff, supports strategic planning, and drives continuous improvement across the practice.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
Oversee the day-to-day running of the GP surgery. Ensure smooth delivery of reception, administration, and patient services. Develop and implement operational policies and procedures. Monitor practice performance and service quality. Ensure compliance with NHS regulations, CQC standards, GDPR, and health & safety requirements. Financial Management
Prepare and manage practice budgets and financial forecasts. Monitor income, expenditure, and cash flow. Oversee payroll, pensions, invoicing, and supplier contracts. Maximise practice income through NHS contracts and enhanced services. Liaise with accountants and external financial advisors. Human Resources
Manage recruitment, induction, training, and appraisal processes. Support staff wellbeing, performance management, and disciplinary procedures. Maintain staff rotas and workforce planning. Ensure HR policies comply with employment legislation. Strategic Planning & Development
Support partners in developing long-term business plans. Identify opportunities for service improvement and growth. Lead projects relating to digital transformation and patient access improvements. Build relationships with NHS bodies, PCNs, and external stakeholders. Governance & Compliance
Ensure the surgery meets all Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements. Maintain confidentiality and data protection standards. Monitor risk management and business continuity plans. Support audit preparation and regulatory inspections. Patient Experience

Essential Qualifications & Experience
Experience in business, operations, or practice management. Strong financial and budget management skills. Experience leading and managing teams. Knowledge of NHS primary care systems and regulations. Excellent communication and organisational skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and practice management systems. Desirable
Previous experience in a GP practice or healthcare setting. Qualification in business management, healthcare management, or HR. Knowledge of CQC compliance and NHS contracts.
